13.2G HAND TURNED SOAPSTONE SPINDLE WHORL IN SEA GREEN BANDS EN ESPAÑA
13.2 grams 29 x 10.8mm This spindle whorl was hand turned out of a dark green and blackish soapstone, otherwise called steatite. It is generally a sea green with speckled and cloudy areas of very dark green. It has tiny inclusions of pyrite, which are the tiny flecks which you can see in the pictures. This whorl has been etched and painted with acrylic based gold ink. It is made to be used with a medieval-style spindle stick with tapered points. One can use this spindle as a supported spindle or a drop spindle if one used a half hitch knot. The pictured whorl is not attached to the spindle in any way other than friction, although a clear band underneath or a bit of fiber wrapped about where the whorl should rest will help prevent slipping, but I have not found this necessary with stone whorls. I have found through experience that it may be desirable to be able to remove a whorl from the spindle as the shaft may break or otherwise wear, whereas the stone whorl will last. Also, the yarn wound on the shaft makes a convenient weaving shuttle and one would remove the whorl so it would not catch on the warp. It is recommended to use a spindle made of hardwood as softer woods will wear more quickly. This listing is for a spindle whorl only, with an option to include a spindle stick at a discount. Free shipping applied to domestic orders of $50 and over. International buyers may chose to apply my 15PERCENTTHX coupon at checkout for orders $50 and over.
