BLACK DANCERS BLACK HISTORY PRINTABLE DIGITAL PRINT OF - EN ESPAÑA
Dance has always been one of the ways Black Americans express themselves. They often use the craft to tell a story. Nothing is more beautiful than the movement of a gifted dancer. This is a printable of three of America’s greatest dancers: • Katherine Dunham • Judith Jamison • Misty Copeland A Little History of These Dancers: Katherine Dunham (1909-2006) was a dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist. She spent three years in the Caribbean studying dance and the motivation behind the dances created by Caribbean choreographers. Katherine fused the movements of Caribbean and African culture with European style ballet and created what is known as the “Dunham Technique.” Judith Jamison (born 1943) started dancing when she was ten years old. She was discovered by Agnes de Mille, the choreographer, and recruited for the American Ballet Theatre. In 1965, Judith became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Alvin Ailey’s protégé. In 1971 Ailey choreographed the ballet “Cry,” a solo piece, for Judith as a birthday present for his mother. Cry became a hit and Judith became one of Ailey’s most acclaimed dancers. Misty Copeland (born 1982) did not start dancing until she was thirteen years, which is late for a ballet dancer. She was recognized as a prodigy right away. When Misty was sixteen, she was invited to New York to participate in a summer program with the American Ballet Theatre. They liked her and asked her to join the company, but Misty wanted to finish high school in California. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York and joined the American Ballet Theatre. She was seventeen. In 2015 Misty became the first Black female principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre.
