Each slice of wood is different. You can safely put a cup of hot drink on them; if you spill your coffee or tea, don't worry, there will not be any trace on the wood or on the painting. Colored side is varnished: The varnish creates a protective coating for the wooden slice against moisture and damage - thanks to it, the wooden slice has a "shine" and a pleasant-to-touch surface. Maintenance requirements are not high as it is enough to wipe it down with a piece of damp cloth from time to time as to get rid of dust.
