Other than the team of arrangers (Harry Goodnight, Roger Newman, Larry Mahoberack), there are no musician credits nor any notes. Ultimately the blame for this uninteresting record must go to the producer, the co-engineer, the lead keyboardist, and the singer -- who are all one and the same person.

This new album by David Chesky is a sincere statement of worries the composer feels necessary to share with the world, in which all of us live and die. Its monumental form allows us to reflect on many tragic events (such as the latest disaster of COVID-19). By entering our lives, it unavoidably demands us to define our beliefs. Chesky’s music not only concerns our preferences in aesthetics, but also demands political awareness from us (while being far away from political activism). We are confronted by phenomena we do not understand, but ultimately determine our choices - what really has, had, and still will have meaning in our lives. We have to learn separate the “important” and “unimportant” things and events. Radio 6:45 A2 Rip Me Off 4:13 A3 It's Called The Rock 7:25 B1 I'd Rather Fight Than Switch 4:12 B2 Drown My Heart 3:34 B3 My Friend 3:56 B4 Patiently 4:34   Edwin Starr enjoyed a renaissance in the singles chart at the end of the 70's, moving from the soul that had made him famous to light disco, and scoring a major hit the previous year with “Contact”, a cold slab of electronic funk with the most insistent Moroder styled synth bass line, similar to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. It was a worldwide smash and still appears on many disco hit compilation albums. The follow up, “Happy Radio” follows a similar vein, although there is less electronic rhythm and more horn fills; bearing similarities to the Earth Wind & Fire sound that was very popular at the time.  The single and title track is a nagging disco stomper, with a driving memorable bass line and chattering horn interruptions and would be a sure fire floor filler for a number of years. The rest of the album is pretty lightweight, following exactly the same pattern as the title track, except that the hooks aren’t as strong and songs like “I’d Rather Fight Than Switch”, and “It’s Called The Rock” sound about 5 years out of time. It’s interesting that barring the excellent title track the two traditional soul numbers are worth listening to (“Drown My Heart”, and “My Friend”), which probably come too late in the album for the listener,  who may have already turned off.

The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.

Just as  ELO 's follow-up to the sweeping  Discovery  seemed tame by comparison, so  The Present  failed to match the grandiose arrangements of  the Moodies ' previous record. It's still a solid effort, bolstered by strong songwriting and pleasant melodies, but as good as the opening "Blue World" is, its downbeat message is no substitute for the clarion call of "The Voice."  The Present  seems to make a conscious effort to scale back the arena-size sound of their previous album, returning to the warmly rendered ballads of old.  Patrick Moraz, whose keyboards were a revelation on  Long Distance Voyager, plays a diminished role here, as  Justin Hayward 's guitar takes more of the lead, suggesting a poor man's  Phil Manzanera  or  David Gilmour. While it charted well and provided hit singles in "Blue World" and "Sitting at the Wheel" (again, it's  John Lodge  who provides the most invigorating track),  The Present  is a gift that listeners will need to warm up to over time. Only after several sittings do  Hayward 's lush ballads like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Running Water" sink in. Following the format of their last effort, the closing tracks are given to  Ray Thomas, who once more proves a compelling presence (he's also the only good thing about "Going Nowhere"). "I Am" and "Sorry" amount to little more than love songs, but  Thomas ' sense for dramatic arrangements manages to elevate the musical discussion. Given the now infrequent release of new albums by  the Moody Blues, more could have been expected from  The Present, but less could have been achieved (as the disappointing  Keys of the Kingdom  demonstrated). If it's merely average by  Moodies  standards, at least  The Present  didn't bode ill for the future.

The brief "Blues for Mingus," a wry salute from one master bassist to another (Mingus  died about six months before this album's release), is a cool acoustic breather for piano trio, and the eloquent  Stan Getz  can be detected, though nearly buried under the garish vocals and rock-style mix, on "The Streets of Philadelphia." Yet even the talented  Clarke  in full creative flower couldn't quite fill a double set with new material, so he has a tendency to reprise some of his old memorable riffs a lot, and there are several energetic snapshots of his live band in action. In its zeal to get this two-LP set onto one disc, Epic deleted three of the original 15 tracks -- including at least one gem, the sizzling hard rocker "All About" -- and scrambled the order of the remaining tunes. Which is dumb, because the missing tracks only take up a bit less than 12 minutes of playing time, not enough to overload a 65-minute disc. Hunt for the double-LP version if you can still play vinyl.

Leaving behind the more traditional trappings of his R&B-inflected debut, he instead looked to the synthesized future, driving his organic bass and guitars into what amounted to a concept album of sorts, fueled by memories of lazy Saturday B-movie afternoons. Bright, punchy pop punctuates this set. From the quirky sci-fi of "Plan-9" and the contemporary urban groove on "State Your Mind," which is one of the album's better tracks,  Rodgers  fills the space with eminently danceable, if somewhat same-y, songs using synthesizer tricks to thrill. "Let's Go out Tonight," meanwhile, proved the album's hot prospect, dipping into the Top 100, giving  Rodgers  his only solo chart hit. Rounding things out are the ballad "Wavelength" and  Rodgers ' immaculate instrumentation -- most notably the guitar and bass, which bound through the funky "Groove Master" with glee. Perhaps a little too light on substance,  B-Movie Matinee  still manages to please. Being  Nile Rodgers  can't be easy, as the mere mention of his name conjures such strong sonic images from his  Chic  canon, and it's hard to ignore those predispositions when listening to his solo material. But that's no detriment to the fine set he's unleashed here.
