CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 Cannonball Adderley "Cannonball And Eight Giants" LPx2 (Milestone) 1974 made in Spain cat. num. MM.40-068/69 S #jazz previously released as "Portait Of Cannonball" and "Things Are Getting Better" on Riverside label. A Little Taste 4:34 Straight Life 5:30 Minority (Take 2) 7:24 Minority (Take 3) 7:05 Nardis 5:30 Blue Funk 5:30 People Will Say We're In Love 9:38 Blues Oriental 4:55 A Few Previously Unissued Words From Cannonball And Then... 0:47 Things Are Getting Better 7:09 Serves Me Right 4:44 Groovin' High 5:17 The Sidewalks Of New York 6:56 Sounds For Sid 6:24 Just One Of Those Things 6:44 "Portait Of Cannonball" This fine Riverside debut by Adderley was cut just a few months after the alto saxophonist had contributed to Miles Davis ' stellar Milestones release. Joining Adderley for the six tracks here are fellow Davis alumni Philly Joe Jones on drums and Bill Evans on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated Blue Mitchell on trumpet and the equally illustrious Sam Jones on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two Adderley originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic Gigi Gryce number ("Minority"), and Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the Rogers & Hammerstein chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto Cannonball Adderley is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with Modern Jazz Quartet co-founder Milt Jackson on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and the one and only Art Blakey on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with Jackson immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation. Adderley counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between Adderley and Jackson sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as Jackson unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax. Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While Wynton Kelly has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. [Some reissues include two bonus tracks supplementing the original seven-song running order, alternate takes of "Serves Me Right" and "Sidewalks of New York."]

Pistas: 1 – So Long 5:01 2 – Acrobats 2:42 3 – The Worker 3:35 4 – Wax Dolls 2:46 5 – Remember Russia 3:38 6 – Going Deaf For A Living 3:32 7 – Room Service 3:44 8 – Pretty Paracetamol 3:59 9 – Marliese 3:52 10 – You'll Never Find Brian Here 2:10 11 – Berlin 4:34 12 – Battalions Of Strangers 5:06 13 – Bathroom Scenario 3:50 14 – Wristcutters Lullaby 2:49 15 – Crazy Girl 4:27 16 – Limbo 2:15 Fischer-Z were a British rock band formed in 1976 by John Watts and Steve Skolnik at Brunel University. The original line-up consisted of Watts (vocals, guitar), Skolnik (keyboards), David Graham (bass) and Steve Liddle (drums). The band's name is pronounced "fɪʃə zɛd" (fisher zed), a pun on "fish's head" with the "h" dropped, as is usual in many British regional accents. The pun also relies on leaving the "r" unpronounced as in common British non-rhotic accents. Fischer-Z's first hit was "The Worker" from the album Word Salad which firmly established Watts' ability to convey worldly political issues in narrative songs against a background of quirky pop and reggae-influenced music. In an interview in Record Mirror in 1981, Watts put this down to the remix of the song from the album version, which put the emphasis on the keyboards rather than his guitar. Skolnik departed after their second album Going Deaf for a Living, leaving Watts to take over keyboards. Watts' lyrics draw heavily on his experiences of studying clinical psychology and as a mental health care worker. Several songs on their third album Red Skies Over Paradise in 1981, such as "Berlin" and "Red Skies Over Paradise" were about the Cold War and the song "Cruise Missiles" was about the nuclear arms race and the mutual threat of the superpowers with nuclear war. Fischer-Z were more popular in mainland Europe than their native UK, especially in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Portugal (two top 10 hits and a No. 3 album). Fischer-Z were also successful in Australia, where they achieved two Top 20 hits with "So Long" from the album Going Deaf for a Living and "The Perfect Day" from Reveal.[2] After the album Red Skies over Paradise Watts dissolved the band in mid-1981, deciding his art could not evolve within a band context.

It also collects tracks released on extended play singles, the band's first release An Ideal for Living, and two samplers issued by Factory Records, A Factory Sample and Earcom 2: Contradiction. The single "Atmosphere" had been originally issued in France as "Licht und Blindheit" with "Dead Souls" on the B-side. Following the death of Ian Curtis, it was reissued as a posthumous B-side of the "She's Lost Control" single in an alternate version from the track that had previously appeared on Unknown Pleasures. The vinyl version omits the single "Komakino" and does not include the complete titles from the extended plays. Later CD pressings issued by London Records contain a previously unreleased mix of "She's Lost Control" that is slightly different from the original single release. More guitar is mixed within the song, the synthesizer melody is shortened and starts at a later point, and the ending of the song is extended by 15 seconds and doesn't fade out. Substance was digitally remastered in 2015 containing the alternate mix of "She's Lost Control" and two additional tracks: "As You Said" (the second b-side of Komakino) and the b-side mix of "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

" Stripped " y " But Not Tonight " fueron compuestas por Martin Gore. Mute CD Bong10,Stripped – Highland Mix 1. «Stripped» 3:51 2. «But Not Tonight» 4:16 3. «Stripped» (Highland Mix) 6:41 4. «But Not Tonight» (Extended Remix) 5:13 5. «Breathing in Fumes» 6:06 6. «Fly on the Windscreen» (Quiet Mix) 4:24 7. «Black Day» 2:37 " Stripped " is Depeche Mode's fifteenth UK single, released on 10 February 1986. It was the first single from the album Black Celebration, and the band's thirteenth overall and sixth consecutive single to hit the UK Top 20, peaking at number 15. " Stripped " is well known for its innovative use of sampling. The underlying beat is a distorted and slowed-down sound of a motorcycle engine running, while the main melody begins with a car's ignition starting, and the end uses sounds of fireworks. The band's U.S. label Sire Records, however, decided to use the B-side " But Not Tonight " on the soundtrack to the movie Modern Girls and included the song on US editions of Black Celebration. As a result, the single was flipped, and released as " But Not Tonight " in the United States to help promote the movie. The band was not happy with this decision, seeing "But Not Tonight" as a useless pop track recorded in less than a day. The single did not chart. Surprisingly, despite previous criticism of the song by the band, an acoustic version of "But Not Tonight" was sometimes performed by Martin Gore on Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine Tour and is included in the 2014 album "Live in Berlin". The other two B-Sides are " Breathing in Fumes " and " Black Day ". " Breathing in Fumes " was a new song using samples from " Stripped ", mixed by the band and Thomas Stiehler. " Black Day " is an acoustic, alternate version of "Black Celebration" sung by Martin Gore, and is co-written by him, Alan Wilder, and producer Daniel Miller – the only Depeche Mode song where Miller receives a writing credit. The " Highland Mix " of " Stripped " was mixed by Mark Ellis (better known as Flood), who in the future would produce Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion records. Some editions of the Black Celebration CD include the extended remix of "But Not Tonight" along with "Black Day" and "Breathing in Fumes" as bonus tracks. The music video for "Stripped" was the last Depeche Mode video to be directed by Peter Care and was filmed outside of Hansa Studios in Berlin. The music video for "But Not Tonight" was directed by Tamra Davis and is available in multiple versions. "Stripped" was featured in the film Say Anything....

David Chesky - Songs for a Broken World (CD, Album) (2021) (Precintado) David Chesky - Songs for a Broken World (CD, Album) (2021) (Precintado) A new large work for orchestra, choir, and soloists, David Chesky is able to capture the immeasurable difficulty that each of us have gone through this past year in his distinct compositional voice. This new album by David Chesky is a sincere statement of worries the composer feels necessary to share with the world, in which all of us live and die. Its monumental form allows us to reflect on many tragic events (such as the latest disaster of COVID-19). By entering our lives, it unavoidably demands us to define our beliefs. Chesky’s music not only concerns our preferences in aesthetics, but also demands political awareness from us (while being far away from political activism). We are confronted by phenomena we do not understand, but ultimately determine our choices - what really has, had, and still will have meaning in our lives. We have to learn separate the “important” and “unimportant” things and events. No one is obligated to go to the “barricade,” but we are simply obligated to recognize injustice in all forms and name it personally (even in silence) instead of accepting terror as something “common” and “far away from us.” Politicians, social media, opinions, commercial accusations - all of these should be seen as instruments of “terror.” If we want to remain humans with hearts and souls, we will find ourselves in tune with David Chesky’s sounds, which speak to us and awake our empathy. Bob Dylan - harmonica Gene Clark - vocals David Crosby - guitar, harmony vocals Chris Hillman - bass Leland Sklar - bass David Vaught - bass Chris Ethridge - bass Bruce Johnston - piano, harmony vocals Spanky McFarlane - vocals Mike Wofford - piano Charles Lloyd - sax Hal Blane - percussion John Guerin - drums Jim Gordon - drums Michael Clarke - drums Jerry Cole - guitar Buddy Emmons - steel guitar Spooner Oldham - keyboards Charles Lloyd - saxophone The Jimmy Joyce Children Chorus - vocals I'm So Restless My New Woman Lost My Drivin' Wheel Draggin' Time Cube Bag Full of Money Hannoi Hannah Stone Heave Away M'Linda The Water Is Wide Roger McGuinn's 1973 self-titled solo debut was in most respects a breath of fresh air after the final days of the Byrds, in which the group was floundering in directionless mediocrity. In a sense, it's a back-to-basics album that emphasizes much of what McGuinn does so well: his forceful reedy vocals, his guitar playing, and his skills at both writing earnest folk-rock material (usually with future Bob Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy here) and interpreting unusual traditional and contemporary songs. Never was it folkier than on the acoustic "I'm So Restless," which benefited from harmonica by Dylan himself (about whom the song was partially about). All four of the other original Byrds play on "My New Woman," which is virtually a reunion of the original quintet, with the addition of saxophone by jazzman Charles Lloyd; David Crosby makes unobtrusive cameos on some other tracks. As likable as it is, however, the album isn't an unqualified triumph. Some of the songs aren't so hot, some of the Moog synthesizer (by McGuinn) is unnecessary, his vocals sometimes seem to have been recorded with too much brittleness, and none of this is as good as the best of the Byrds. Unexpected influences make themselves heard in the Beach Boys harmonies of "Draggin'" (with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys on piano and backup harmonies), the Vietnam blues of "Hanoi Hannah," and the gospel-rock of "Stone." The 2004 CD reissue adds two previously unissued bonus tracks: a solo acoustic cover of the traditional folk song "John, John" and a less pleasing cover of Jackson Browne 's "Jamaica, Say You Will." It also has historical liner notes with plenty of quotes on the sessions and songs from McGuinn himself. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

DENIECE WILLIAMS: I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE [ESP 1979] 7” DENIECE WILLIAMS: I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE [ESP 1979] 7” Deniece Williams "I've Got The Next Dance" single 7" (CBS) 1979 made in Spain cat. num. CBS 7399 #disco #soul #funk a. I've got the next dance b. when love comes calling One of the most distinctive vocalists who arrived during the soul era, Deniece Williams is known for soaring, four-octave soprano voice, late-'70s and early-'80s R&B classics such as "Free" and "Silly," and the 1984 number one pop hit "Let's Hear It for the Boy." Born June Deniece Chandler in Gary, Indiana, she grew up singing in a Pentecostal church, which forbid the congregation to listen to anything but gospel music. Outside of wanting a 1959 Thunderbird, she had no serious ambitions but was deeply interested in music. Her favorite singers were Carmen McRae (for her diction) and Nancy Wilson, who, for Williams, exemplified class and elegance. However, her she also looked up to her parents, both of whom sang. From 1968 through 1970, Williams recorded a handful of singles for the Chicago-based Lock and Toddlin' Town labels as Deniece (or Denise) Chandler. None of them charted, but "I'm Walking Away" and "Mama, I Wish I Stayed Home" became Northern soul cult classics. In need of employment and with college on the back burner, the fledgling singer was introduced to personal hero Stevie Wonder by John Harris, her cousin from Detroit, who happened to be on tour as a valet for Wonder (and was also his childhood friend). Her cousin arranged for Williams to meet Wonder backstage at a concert. Six months later, Williams was flown into Detroit by Wonder for an audition. Among the 26 who auditioned, Williams, who sang "Teach Me Tonight," was one of three hired by Wonder. The three became known as Wonderlove. Her touring with Wonder lasted for several years, a period in which she recorded background vocals for Talking Book, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life, Wonder -produced Syreeta and Minnie Riperton sessions, and other releases by the likes of Esther Phillips and Roberta Flack.

" Promised You A Miracle " is a 1982 song by Simple Minds and was released as the first single from their fifth studio album New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84). It is most notable for being the band's first successful chart hit in the UK, reaching #13 in the UK Singles Chart and charting for 11 weeks.[Their previous nine UK singles yielded no Top 40 hits in that country. It was the only song on the album that included Kenny Hyslop as the studio session drummer. Mike Ogletree and Mel Gaynor contributed for the other eight tracks. The song triggered a prolonged period of commercial success for the band, during which they yielded 21 original UK hit singles in a row, up to and including 1998's "Glitterball" from the album Neapolis. It also enabled them to make their debut on the British music television show Top of the Pops. A live version from the album Live in the City of Light was released in 1987. TANGERINE DREAM: RUBYCON [UK 1984] CD/RE TANGERINE DREAM: RUBYCON [UK 1984] CD/RE (Virgin) 1984 made in UK cat. num. CDV 2025 #space rock #progressive rock 1 Rubycon - Part One 17:18 2 Rubycon - Part Two 17:35 The members of Tangerine Dream continued to hone their craft as pioneers of the early days of electronica, and the mid-'70s proved to be a time of prosperity and musical growth for the trio of Chris Franke, early member Peter Baumann, and permanent frontman Edgar Froese. The three of them had been delivering mysterious space records on a regular basis, and their growing confidence with early synthesizers (the best that money could buy at the time) made them virtuosos of the genre, even as they kept things organic and unpredictable with gongs, prepared piano, and electric guitar. Rubycon has aged gracefully for the most part, making it a solid companion (and follow-up) to their 1974 album, Phaedra. The somewhat dated palette of sounds here never overshadow the mood: eerie psychedelia without the paisleys -- Pink Floyd without the rock. "Rubycon, Pt. 1" ebbs and flows through tense washes of echo and Mellotron choirs, as primitive sequencer lines bubble to the surface. "Pt. 2" opens in a wonderfully haunted way, like air-raid sirens at the lowest possible pitch, joined in unison by several male voices (someone in the band must have heard György Ligeti's work for 2001). Rising out of the murkiness, the synthesizer arpeggios return to drive things along, and Froese weaves his backwards-recorded guitar through the web without really calling too much attention to himself. The piece evolves through varying degrees of tension, takes a pit stop on the shoreline of some faraway beach, then ever so gradually unravels a cluster of free-form strings and flutes. The rest are vapors, your ears are sweating under your headphones, and the smoke has cleared from your bedroom. This is a satisfying ambient record from the pre-ambient era, too dark for meditation, and too good to be forgotten.

RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE Ry Cooder "Bop Till You Bop" LP (Warner) 1984 made in Spain cat. num. LB 56691 #rock #blues rock #rock&roll Little Sister 3:49 Go Home, Girl 5:10 The Very Thing That Makes Your Rich 5:32 I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine 4:43 Down In Hollywood 4:14 Look At Granny Run Run 3:09 Trouble You Can't Fool Me 4:55 Don't You Mess Me Up A Good Thing 4:08 I Can't Win 4:16 Following his conceptual 1978 release, Jazz, Ry Cooder returned the next year with the R&B/soul-based Bop Till You Drop. The first major-label, digitally recorded album, Bop is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a Cooder / Tim Drummond original) that doesn't always live up to its promise. Cooder and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of Tim Drummond and Jim Keltner along with guitarist David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to Cooder is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still, Bop is worthwhile given Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s Elvis hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring Cooder 's longtime cohort Bobby King on lead vocal.

THE MOODY BLUES: THE PRESENT [UK 1985] LP THE MOODY BLUES: THE PRESENT [UK 1985] LP The Moody Blues "The Present" LP (Threshold) 1985 made in UK cat. num. 810 119-1 #rock #progressive rock A1 Blue World 5:16 A2 Meet Me Halfway 4:09 A3 Sitting At The Wheel 5:35 A4 Going Nowhere 5:27 B1 Hole In The World 1:55 B2 Under My Feet 4:48 B3 It's Cold Outside Your Heart 4:23 B4 Running Water 3:20 B5 I Am 1:41 B6 Sorry 4:56 ELO fans who found in Long Distance Voyager a new Discovery can be excused for thinking there's no Time like The Present. Just as ELO 's follow-up to the sweeping Discovery seemed tame by comparison, so The Present failed to match the grandiose arrangements of the Moodies ' previous record. It's still a solid effort, bolstered by strong songwriting and pleasant melodies, but as good as the opening "Blue World" is, its downbeat message is no substitute for the clarion call of "The Voice." The Present seems to make a conscious effort to scale back the arena-size sound of their previous album, returning to the warmly rendered ballads of old. Patrick Moraz, whose keyboards were a revelation on Long Distance Voyager, plays a diminished role here, as Justin Hayward 's guitar takes more of the lead, suggesting a poor man's Phil Manzanera or David Gilmour. While it charted well and provided hit singles in "Blue World" and "Sitting at the Wheel" (again, it's John Lodge who provides the most invigorating track), The Present is a gift that listeners will need to warm up to over time. Only after several sittings do Hayward 's lush ballads like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Running Water" sink in. Following the format of their last effort, the closing tracks are given to Ray Thomas, who once more proves a compelling presence (he's also the only good thing about "Going Nowhere"). "I Am" and "Sorry" amount to little more than love songs, but Thomas ' sense for dramatic arrangements manages to elevate the musical discussion. Given the now infrequent release of new albums by the Moody Blues, more could have been expected from The Present, but less could have been achieved (as the disappointing Keys of the Kingdom demonstrated). If it's merely average by Moodies standards, at least The Present didn't bode ill for the future.

This was to promote a wide range of less popular artists on compilation albums known as the 'Loss Leader' PRO series, sold at a significantly reduced mail-order price. This Frank Zappa-oriented release is part of the series, although this particular compilation is also geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. These two labels were manufactured and distributed by Reprise Records. This Frank Zappa-oriented 'Zapped' release is the 6th issue in the series, a compilation geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. (These two labels were manufactured and distributed for Reprise Records by Warner Bros. Records from mid 1969 [Previously 7Arts]). The black & white cover of this PRO 368 release has a portrait of Zappa and the title is "Zapped" without an accent over the 'e' (as on a subsequent/similar PRO 368 release with a 'collage' cover & Reprise label). This vinyl's label is pale blue with a dark blue 'Bizarre' text. Issues did occasionally appear later in retail outlets, particularly in Australia.

COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' Colourbox "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" single 7" (4AD) 1986 made in UK cat. num. AD 605 #synth pop A The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme 3:06 B Philip Glass 3:29 One of the legendary 4AD label's earliest and most under-recognized acts, Colourbox were among the first artists outside of the realm of hip-hop to rely heavily on sampling techniques; ultimately, their arty blue-eyed soul -- a fusion of far-ranging influences spanning from classic R&B to dub to industrial -- reached its commercial and creative apotheosis through their work on M/A/R/R/S ' seminal "Pump Up the Volume" project, a reflection of the group's longstanding interest in the burgeoning underground dance music scene of the 1980s. Colourbox were primarily the work of London-based brothers Martyn and Steven Young, who recruited vocalist Debbion Currie to sing on their 1982 4AD debut, "Breakdown." Curry was replaced by Lorita Grahame in time for the trio's 1983 re-recording of the same track, this time produced by Mick Glossop. Colourbox 's self-titled debut EP -- a collection of dub and scratching experiments heralding their first plunge into sampling technology, edited down from three hours of studio sessions -- appeared later that same year, with the single "Say You" following in 1984. After another 12", "Punch," the group issued 1985's "The Moon Is Blue," a teaser for its upcoming full-length LP, also a self-titled affair; "Baby I Love You So" and "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" both appeared the following year. In 1987, at the behest of 4AD chief Ivo Watts-Russell, the Young brothers teamed with labelmates A.R. Kane as M/A/R/R/S to record a single fusing the rhythms and beats from classic soul recordings with state of the art electronics and production. Complete with scratches by champion mixer Chris "C.J." Mackintosh and London DJ Dave Dorrell, "Pump Up the Volume" -- a breakthrough effort heralding sampling's gradual absorption from hip-hop into dance music and ultimately the pop mainstream -- soon topped the British charts, the first 4AD release to accomplish that feat. Plans for a follow-up never materialized, however; stranger still, despite M/A/R/R/S ' success, both the Youngs and Colourbox seemed to vanish, with no future recordings forthcoming.

SIMPLE MINDS: CELEBRATION [ESP 1982] LP/COMP SIMPLE MINDS: CELEBRATION [ESP 1982] LP/COMP Simple Minds "Celebration" LP (Arista) 1982 made in Spain cat. num. I-204 521 #new wave #pop rock #synth pop Life In A Day Chelsea Girl Premonition Factory Calling Your Name I Travel Changeling Celebrate Thirty Frames A Second Kaleidoscope Originally released in 1982 by Arista in the U.K. and reissued on CD by the Dutch Disky imprint in 2001, Celebration serviceably culls some of the better moments from Simple Minds ' first three albums: 1979's Life in a Day and Reel to Real Cacophony and 1980's Empires and Dance. Given the sadly neglected status of the band's early catalog -- meaning anything that was released prior to 1982's breakthrough New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) -- through the early 2000s, it is doubly unfortunate that a compilation like this remained out of print for an extended period of time. And though the studio albums remained in print in the U.K., Simple Minds ' early years hardly received the red carpet compilation treatment that their later works did. While nothing here came close to approaching the stadium-pleasing popularity of later smashes like "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Alive and Kicking," or even "Promised You a Miracle," Celebration might provide a little shock to an initiated someone who snaps up a copy. It's a near-definite that plenty of people who own New Gold Dream and/or the Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation remain oblivious to the fact that Simple Minds released five albums that ranged from good to spectacular between 1979 and 1981, before New Gold Dream came along with its perfect balance of art and pop to connect with a mass audience. Not only was 1979-1981 a prolific period for the band, but it was a period that witnessed them blossoming from a decent guitar-based post-punk band to a far more rhythmic and experimental entity that gradually shed their influences while ambitiously building on them. And as the few brave souls who have remained devout Simple Minds fans from day one might tell you, Celebration has stood the test of time better than Glittering Prize track-for-track.
