La Marshall Tucker, fue la banda que cerró el triángulo de oro dentro del rock sureño junto a las otras dos más representativas del género, The Allman Brothers Band y Lynyrd Skynyrd, teniendo cada una de estas formaciones caminos y orientaciones diferentes, pero tomando como base el sonido y sentimiento sureño como raíz de su música. El distintivo esencial de la Marshall y el sello único e inconfundible que marcó su obra fue el Country-Rock y la cultura "cowboy ", adoptando cierta actitud derivada del "salvaje oeste" en su música, llevada a cabo con gran acierto por los hermanos Toy y Tommy Caldwell. Nunca renunciaron a otros estilos como el rythm & blues, rock, blues o incluso el jazz, dada las aportaciones de unos magníficos, extraordinarios e incansables músicos que eran pura energía, sobre todo en sus memorables directos. Realizaban actuaciones increíbles, llegando incluso a ser delirantes para un público súper entregado. "Where We All Belong" doble álbum y tercero en su discografía, fue publicado en 1975 y se compone de una parte grabada en estudio y otra en directo, además de suponer un punto crucial en su carrera. Comienzan con el clásico "This Ol'Cowboy", un bello tema dedicado al héroe de Toy Caldwell, el actor y mito eterno del Western, John Wayne. Como dato anecdótico, posteriormente Caldwell le compraría el caballo que utilizó en 1969 en la oscarizada "True Grit" (Valor de ley). De claro estilo country-rock, con el uso de instrumentos propios del género como el banjo, Steel- guitar, la flauta o el violín, nos encontramos temas como "Low Down Ways", o una auténtica balada romántica "In My Own Way". El resto de temas de esta parte fueron grabados en los estudios Capricorn, todos ellos soberbios y podemos destacar "Where A Country Boy Legends", que contó con la ayuda de un guitarrista excepcional llamado Elvin Bishop, que en años anteriores participó con los Allman Brothers y en esta ocasión a la slide-guitar. En la parte de estudio, la Marshall estuvo formada por Toy Caldwell a las guitarras, su hermano Tommy Caldwell (bajo), George McCorkle (guitarra y banjo), Jerry Eubanks (flauta y saxo), Doug Gray (voz) y Paul Riddle a la batería. Estos eran los integrantes originales de la banda, a la que se incorporaron un buen número de músicos de reputado prestigio como fue el caso del legendario Charlie Daniels al violín, Paul Hornsby al piano, Johnny Vernazza a la slide y entre otros, al anteriormente mencionado Elvin Bishop. La segunda parte del álbum fue capturada el 11 de julio de 1974 en el Uhlein Hall Arts Center de Milwaukee, con la banda original y la inestimable colaboración de Charlie Daniels. Abren con la incendiaria y explosiva "Ramblin'", un tema rápido con un Toy imparable a la guitarra eléctrica, equiparándose a leyendas como Duane Allman. Y para finalizar "Take The Higway", otro de sus clásicos. Unidos bajo un mismo sentimiento, "The Marshall Tucker Band" originarios de Spartanburg en Carolina del Sur nos dejan uno de sus álbumes más célebres, siendo uno de los mejores exponentes dentro del rock-sureño y narrándonos sus epopeyas por el "viejo oeste" como si fuésemos viajando en una antigua diligencia... Esta banda maravillosa formada en 1971 en Spartanburg, Carolina del Sur, por los hermanos Caldwell, Toy a la guitarra y Tommy al bajo, el cantante Doug Gray, el guitarrista George McCorkle, el batería Paul Riddle, así como Jerry Eubanks a las flautas, combinaba a la perfección el Rock, con el country, con el blues y con el Jazz. La banda adquirió un notable reconocimiento en los años 70 (época de apogeo del Rock Sureño), pero la muerte de Tommy Caldwell en accidente de coche en 1980, y el abandono de Toy Caldwell en 1982 para iniciar una carrera en solitario llevó a que la banda se disolviera en 1983. A finales de los 80 la banda se reformó, liderada por Gray y Eubanks, y con diversas formaciones y con muchos cambios, la banda sigue hoy en día, aunque lejos del esplendor de los años 70.- Yo reconozco que le tengo un cariño especial a esta disco, que está compuesto en parte por material de estudio, y en parte por grabaciones en directo. Just as  ELO 's follow-up to the sweeping  Discovery  seemed tame by comparison, so  The Present  failed to match the grandiose arrangements of  the Moodies ' previous record. It's still a solid effort, bolstered by strong songwriting and pleasant melodies, but as good as the opening "Blue World" is, its downbeat message is no substitute for the clarion call of "The Voice."  The Present  seems to make a conscious effort to scale back the arena-size sound of their previous album, returning to the warmly rendered ballads of old.  Patrick Moraz, whose keyboards were a revelation on  Long Distance Voyager, plays a diminished role here, as  Justin Hayward 's guitar takes more of the lead, suggesting a poor man's  Phil Manzanera  or  David Gilmour. While it charted well and provided hit singles in "Blue World" and "Sitting at the Wheel" (again, it's  John Lodge  who provides the most invigorating track),  The Present  is a gift that listeners will need to warm up to over time. Only after several sittings do  Hayward 's lush ballads like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Running Water" sink in. Following the format of their last effort, the closing tracks are given to  Ray Thomas, who once more proves a compelling presence (he's also the only good thing about "Going Nowhere"). "I Am" and "Sorry" amount to little more than love songs, but  Thomas ' sense for dramatic arrangements manages to elevate the musical discussion. Given the now infrequent release of new albums by  the Moody Blues, more could have been expected from  The Present, but less could have been achieved (as the disappointing  Keys of the Kingdom  demonstrated). If it's merely average by  Moodies  standards, at least  The Present  didn't bode ill for the future.

TANGERINE DREAM: RUBYCON [UK 1984] CD/RE TANGERINE DREAM: RUBYCON [UK 1984] CD/RE (Virgin)  1984  made in UK cat. num.  CDV 2025 #space rock  #progressive rock   1 Rubycon - Part One 17:18 2 Rubycon - Part Two 17:35   The members of Tangerine Dream continued to hone their craft as pioneers of the early days of electronica, and the mid-'70s proved to be a time of prosperity and musical growth for the trio of Chris Franke, early member Peter Baumann, and permanent frontman Edgar Froese. The three of them had been delivering mysterious space records on a regular basis, and their growing confidence with early synthesizers (the best that money could buy at the time) made them virtuosos of the genre, even as they kept things organic and unpredictable with gongs, prepared piano, and electric guitar. Rubycon has aged gracefully for the most part, making it a solid companion (and follow-up) to their 1974 album, Phaedra. The somewhat dated palette of sounds here never overshadow the mood: eerie psychedelia without the paisleys -- Pink Floyd without the rock. "Rubycon, Pt. 1" ebbs and flows through tense washes of echo and Mellotron choirs, as primitive sequencer lines bubble to the surface. "Pt. 2" opens in a wonderfully haunted way, like air-raid sirens at the lowest possible pitch, joined in unison by several male voices (someone in the band must have heard György Ligeti's work for 2001). Rising out of the murkiness, the synthesizer arpeggios return to drive things along, and Froese weaves his backwards-recorded guitar through the web without really calling too much attention to himself. The piece evolves through varying degrees of tension, takes a pit stop on the shoreline of some faraway beach, then ever so gradually unravels a cluster of free-form strings and flutes. The rest are vapors, your ears are sweating under your headphones, and the smoke has cleared from your bedroom. This is a satisfying ambient record from the pre-ambient era, too dark for meditation, and too good to be forgotten.

Radio 6:45 A2 Rip Me Off 4:13 A3 It's Called The Rock 7:25 B1 I'd Rather Fight Than Switch 4:12 B2 Drown My Heart 3:34 B3 My Friend 3:56 B4 Patiently 4:34   Edwin Starr enjoyed a renaissance in the singles chart at the end of the 70's, moving from the soul that had made him famous to light disco, and scoring a major hit the previous year with “Contact”, a cold slab of electronic funk with the most insistent Moroder styled synth bass line, similar to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. It was a worldwide smash and still appears on many disco hit compilation albums. The follow up, “Happy Radio” follows a similar vein, although there is less electronic rhythm and more horn fills; bearing similarities to the Earth Wind & Fire sound that was very popular at the time.  The single and title track is a nagging disco stomper, with a driving memorable bass line and chattering horn interruptions and would be a sure fire floor filler for a number of years. The rest of the album is pretty lightweight, following exactly the same pattern as the title track, except that the hooks aren’t as strong and songs like “I’d Rather Fight Than Switch”, and “It’s Called The Rock” sound about 5 years out of time. It’s interesting that barring the excellent title track the two traditional soul numbers are worth listening to (“Drown My Heart”, and “My Friend”), which probably come too late in the album for the listener,  who may have already turned off.

"Bad Time" fue utilizada como un a-capella intro de "Sweet Child O'Mine" de Axl Rose en la mayoría de los shows de Guns N'Roses 1992 Use Your Illusion World Tour. Cuenta la leyenda que los FUNK fueron teloneros de los Led Zeppelin en el Detroit's Olympia Stadium, la reacción del público fue tan intensa durante la ejecución de "Inside Lookin' Out" que manager de los Zeppelin, Peter Grant, desenchufó la energia elétrica, impidiendo que los Grand Funk terminasen la canción. Como si esto no bastase, agarró a Terry Knight por el pescuezo y ordenó que la banda fuese retirada del palco inmediatamente. Pero el loco Terry se dirigió calmamente al palco, pidió a la banda que parase de tocar, cogió el micrófono y soltó la lindeza: - "Los Led Zeppelin tienen miedo de los Grand Funk Railroad!" El Público enloqueció, y la banda abandonó el palco, ovacionada por el público. Cuando los Zeppelin subieron para tocar, mitad del estadio se había largado. Algo semejante ocurrió en el concierto de Cleveland, por lo que, los Grand Funk fueron "despedidos" del Tour, y nunca mas volverían a ser invitados a tocar en el mismo festival que los Led Zeppelin.
