But 1979 turned out to be a better year for the South Florida disco/funk/soul band, who returned to the top of the singles charts that year. Released in 1979,  Do You Wanna Go Party  boasts two major singles: the infectious title track song (a number eight R&B hit) and the ballad "Please Don't Go," which soared to number one on Billboard's pop singles chart.

The brief "Blues for Mingus," a wry salute from one master bassist to another (Mingus  died about six months before this album's release), is a cool acoustic breather for piano trio, and the eloquent  Stan Getz  can be detected, though nearly buried under the garish vocals and rock-style mix, on "The Streets of Philadelphia." Yet even the talented  Clarke  in full creative flower couldn't quite fill a double set with new material, so he has a tendency to reprise some of his old memorable riffs a lot, and there are several energetic snapshots of his live band in action. In its zeal to get this two-LP set onto one disc, Epic deleted three of the original 15 tracks -- including at least one gem, the sizzling hard rocker "All About" -- and scrambled the order of the remaining tunes. Which is dumb, because the missing tracks only take up a bit less than 12 minutes of playing time, not enough to overload a 65-minute disc. Hunt for the double-LP version if you can still play vinyl.

He also released the solo works  Dream On,  Guardian of the Light, and  Rendezvous  as well as another Clarke/Duke Project album before leaving Epic for Elektra in 1984. There he recorded  Thief in the Night,  George Duke, and  Night After Night.  Duke 's music delighted mainstream audiences and crossed over from pop to adult contemporary to the R&B charts effortlessly.

After hooking up with friend/bassist  Gary Fletcher, the seeds for  the Blues Band  were sown, resulting in countless albums (including such titles as 1980's Official Bootleg Album and  Ready, 1981's  Itchy Feet, 1982's  Brand Loyalty  which featured new member ex-Family drummer Rob Townsend, 1983's  Bye Bye Blues, 1986's These Kind of Blues, 1989's  Back for More, 1991's Fat City, 1993's  Homage, and 1995's  Wire Less, among others). In addition,  Kelly  formed  the Dave Kelly Band in the mid-'80s (issuing four albums), penned music for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's King of the Ghetto and The Comic Strip Presents Strike!, has been voted Best Acoustic Artist by BBC polls throughout the '90s, and is an honorary patron of the London Guitar College with  Hank Marvin.
