RAY CHARLES: LOVE & PEACE [LONDON - ESP 1978] LP RAY CHARLES: LOVE & PEACE [LONDON - ESP 1978] LP Ray Charles  "Love & Peace"  LP (London)  1978  made in Spain cat. num.  TXS 3126 #soul  #funk  #r&b   You 20th Century Fox 2:45 Take Off That Dress 3:35 She Knows 4:43 Riding Thumb 3:10 We Had It All 4:35 No Achievement Showing 3:38 A Peace That We Never Before Could Enjoy 5:19 Is There Anyone Out There 5:58 Give The Poor Man A Break 3:26   Here, unfortunately, is one of several examples of why Ray Charles has been such a frustrating record-maker over the last quarter of the 20th century at least. His powers of expression as a vocalist and keyboardist are undiminished on the second album of his return to the Atlantic fold; he could still squeeze some soul out of anything. But his ability to choose great, good, or even merely appropriate material had deserted him -- and so we hear nowhere ballads ("She Knows"), stale song ideas ("You 20th Century Fox"), empty, poorly arranged and paced rousers ("We Had It All"), and political statements that fall flat ("A Peace That We Never Before Could Enjoy," "Give the Poor Man a Break") -- nothing that even this prodigious talent can save, and all treated to a veiled, raucous mix. Other than the team of arrangers (Harry Goodnight, Roger Newman, Larry Mahoberack), there are no musician credits nor any notes. Ultimately the blame for this uninteresting record must go to the producer, the co-engineer, the lead keyboardist, and the singer -- who are all one and the same person.

MIKE OLDFIELD: THE KILLING FIELDS [ESP 1984] LP/RE MIKE OLDFIELD: THE KILLING FIELDS [ESP 1984] LP/RE Mike Oldfield   "The Killing Fields"  LP (Virgin)   1984   made in Spain cat. num.  E 206 707 #progressive rock  #pop rock  #soundtrack   Pran's Theme 0:45 Requiem For A City 1:45 Evacuation 5:10 Pran's Theme - 2 1:40 Capture 2:01 Execution 4:10 Bad News 1:10 Pran's Departure 2:03 Worksite 1:18 The Year Zero 0:27 Blood Sucking 1:18 The Year Zero - 2 0:36 Pran's Escape / The Killing Fields 3:11 The Trek 1:58 The Boy's Burial / Pran Sees The Red Cross 2:40 Good News 1:44 Etude 4:38   Crack all the jokes you want about  Mike Oldfield  and his Tubular Bells becoming the hit theme song for The Exorcist. While  Oldfield  is an amazing guitarist who could play with the best of them, with a lithe synth touch that became a trademark, the bottom line is that the man is a serious composer. All the proof one needs apart from his own records like  Incantations  and  Hergest Ridge  is this killer movie score. While  Oldfield  used a purely Western and neo-classical formal approach to write the music for  Roland Joffé 's dramatization of true events, his musical mates were among the best in the business at helping him to bring it off:  David Bedford  wrote arrangements and directed the choir, while  Eberhard Schoener  helped to conduct and direct another choir (!) and master percussionist  Morris Pert  lent his talents to the mix as well. While many scores written during the 1980s come off as laughable fluff in the 21st century,  Oldfield 's score for The Killing Fields is in many ways far more memorable than the film itself. The music here is full of drama, dynamic, textures, and unexpected twists and turns even in the smallest of the incidental pieces, and carries within it a certain majesty that lacks pomp and remains graceful throughout.

Though this isn't as comprehensive as Rhino's double-disc set -- which means it doesn't contain the  David Gates  solo cuts that the first one does -- it still provides most casual listeners with all the  Bread  they'd need, in a highly listenable fashion, too.

ART GARFUNKEL: ANGEL CLARE [ESP 1984] LP/RE ART GARFUNKEL: ANGEL CLARE [ESP 1984] LP/RE Art Garfunkel   "Angel Clare"  LP (CBS)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.  S 32076 #folk rock  #soft rock  #simon&garfunkel   A1 Travelling Boy 5:00 A2 Down In The Willow Garden 4:03 A3 I Shall Sing 3:36 A4 Old Man 3:24 A5 Feuilles-Oh / Do Space Men Pass Dead Souls On Their Way To The Moon? 3:09 B1 All I Know 3:46 B2 Mary Was An Only Child 3:28 B3 Woyaya 3:18 B4 Barbara Allen 5:25 B5 Another Lullaby 3:32   Garfunkel  (he was billed without his first name here) had a lot riding on his debut solo album, and  Angel Clare, named after a character in  Thomas Hardy 's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles, lived up to the heightened expectations for the man who had sung "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and other  Simon & Garfunkel  favorites.  Garfunkel  took no chances, issuing as the first single  Jimmy Webb 's "All I Know," which was arranged in a similar style to "Bridge" and made the Top Ten. Elsewhere on the record,  Garfunkel  took a more spirited approach, notably on a version of  Van Morrison 's "I Shall Sing" that was reminiscent of  Simon & Garfunkel 's "Cecilia" and made the Top 40. Certainly, there was enough firepower on the record, which featured guitarists  Jerry Garcia  and  J.J. Cale. But much of it was filled with stately, orchestra-laden ballads, sung by  Garfunkel  in his naïve, breathy tenor. If  Simon & Garfunkel  had been the thinking man's  Everly Brothers,  Garfunkel  alone turned out to be the thinking man's  Johnny Mathis.

JETHRO TULL: UNDER WRAPS [ESP 1984] LP JETHRO TULL: UNDER WRAPS [ESP 1984] LP (Chrysalis)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.  CDL 1461 #rock  #progressive rock  #folk rock   A1 Lap Of Luxury   A2 Under Wraps #1   A3 European Legacy   A4 Later, That Same Evening   A5 Saboteur   A6 Radio Free Moscow   B1 Nobody's Car   B2 Heat   B3 Under Wraps #2   B4 Paparazzi   B5 Apogee   Ian Anderson 's  Walk into Light  (1983) was an uncharacteristic venture into the world of drum machines and synthesizers, and was partly a collaboration with keyboardist  Peter-John Vettese. The next year the two cut the similar-sounding  Under Wraps  using the  Jethro Tull  banner. Most of the work, including drum programming, was done by  Anderson  in his home studio before guitar and (scant) bass guitar were added. The group members were excited about their latest sounds, which brought a cold edginess to the usual intricate music (the acoustic "Under Wraps No. 2" being one exception). Lyrically,  Anderson  was letting go of his Olde English façade; here he showed his fascination with Cold War-era espionage. While the British audiences didn't mind the changes, U.S. buyers pretty much hated the album. Compared to the U.S. number 19 position of 1982's  The Broadsword and the Beast,  Under Wraps  never got past number 76. (Crest of a Knave, three years later, shot up to number 33.) The original release had 11 tracks, with "Astronomy," "Tundra," "Automotive Engineering," and "General Crossing" appearing as B-sides and bonus tracks around the world. Now the standard release carries all 15 tracks.

CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 Cannonball Adderley   "Cannonball And Eight Giants"  LPx2 (Milestone)   1974  made in Spain cat. num.  MM.40-068/69 S #jazz previously released as "Portait Of Cannonball" and "Things Are Getting Better" on Riverside label. A Little Taste 4:34 Straight Life 5:30 Minority (Take 2) 7:24 Minority (Take 3) 7:05 Nardis 5:30 Blue Funk 5:30 People Will Say We're In Love 9:38 Blues Oriental 4:55 A Few Previously Unissued Words From Cannonball And Then... 0:47 Things Are Getting Better 7:09 Serves Me Right 4:44 Groovin' High 5:17 The Sidewalks Of New York 6:56 Sounds For Sid 6:24 Just One Of Those Things 6:44   "Portait Of Cannonball"   This fine Riverside debut by  Adderley  was cut just a few months after the alto saxophonist had contributed to  Miles Davis ' stellar  Milestones  release. Joining  Adderley  for the six tracks here are fellow  Davis  alumni  Philly Joe Jones  on drums and  Bill Evans  on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated  Blue Mitchell  on trumpet and the equally illustrious  Sam Jones  on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two  Adderley  originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic  Gigi Gryce  number ("Minority"), and  Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare  Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the  Rogers & Hammerstein  chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from  Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto  Cannonball Adderley  is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with  Modern Jazz Quartet  co-founder  Milt Jackson  on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of  Wynton Kelly  on piano,  Percy Heath  on bass, and the one and only  Art Blakey  on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with  Jackson  immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation.  Adderley  counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between  Adderley  and  Jackson  sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of  Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during  Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as  Jackson  unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax.  Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from  Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of  Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While  Wynton Kelly  has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. [Some reissues include two bonus tracks supplementing the original seven-song running order, alternate takes of "Serves Me Right" and "Sidewalks of New York."]

THOMPSON TWINS: QUICK STEP & SIDE KICK [ESP 1983] LP THOMPSON TWINS: QUICK STEP & SIDE KICK [ESP 1983] LP Thompson Twins   "Quick Step & Side Kick"  LP (Arista)  1983  made in Spain cat. num.  I-204 924 #synth pop  #new wave   Love On Your Side 4:25 Lies 3:15 If You Were Here 2:55 Judy Do 3:48 Tears 5:00 Watching 3:57 We Are Detective 3:05 Kamikaze 3:57 Love Lies Bleeding 2:50 All Fall Out 5:25   The record was the first the group recorded as a trio and, not coincidentally, it finds them discovering their signature dance-inflected synth-pop sound. The singles "Love on Your Side" and "In the Name of Love" are the high points, but it's surprising how many of the remaining songs are enjoyable, cleverly crafted and catchy synth-pop gems. Classic.

HEAVEN 17: SUNSET NOW [ESP 1984] EP 12' HEAVEN 17: SUNSET NOW [ESP 1984] EP 12' Heaven 17   "Sunset Now"  EP 12" (Virgin)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.   F-601510 #synth pop   A1 Sunset Now (Extended Version) 5:21 A2 Flame Down 3:14 B1 Counterforce 3:02 B2 Sunset Now (Album Version) 3:40 B3 Counterforce II   It all came together for  Heaven 17  on this release, and as a result it is by far their strongest, most brilliant ep. Combining their various influences (including R&B, pop, dance, electronica),  Heaven 17  fused these styles together to made an almost perfect sound. A strong melody, stunning vocals from  Glenn Gregory, and tight production equal a fascinating glimpse into the human struggle. Adding a number of session players, including a guitarist,  Heaven 17  was able to expand and build on their solid sound.  Gregory  is also allowed to branch out on this album and write more personal and political statements that were not clearly heard on their first two albums. Fans will not be disappointed, and in fact, this could be the album to win new fans over. "Sunset Now," and "Flamedown," are just a few of the reasons for this ep greatness.

CHICAGO: HOT STREETS [CBS - ESP 1990] LP CHICAGO: HOT STREETS [CBS - ESP 1990] LP Chicago   "Hot Streets"  LP (CBS)  1990  made in Spain cat. num.  LSP 982369 1 #pop rock   Alive Again 4:17 The Greatest Love On Earth 3:43 Little Miss Lovin' 4:32 Hot Streets 5:12 Take A Chance 4:35 Gone Long Gone 3:55 Ain't It Time 4:08 Love Was New 3:32 No Tell Lover 4:15 Show Me The Way 3:18   Although  Chicago  tragically marked its decade anniversary with the bitter loss of lead guitarist  Terry Kath,  Hot Streets  (1978) was not only the first release without him, it was also the band's initial offering away from  James William Guercio  -- with whom the group had worked on every one of its previous dozen long-players.  Donnie Dacus  (guitar/vocals) was brought in to fill  Kath 's formidable shoes. His maiden voyage would likewise mark the beginning of a downward spiral in terms of the string of hits that was usually associated with  Chicago  albums. Both the upbeat and pumping opener "Alive Again" and the typical adult contemporary balladry of "No Tell Lover" became their last Top 40 hits for nearly four years.  Phil Ramone 's production gives the material an added and noticeable bite. The  Peter Cetera  (bass/vocals) rocker "Little Miss Lovin" recalls the band's earliest sides by blending an aggressive backbeat with a funky and soulful rhythm. "Gone, Long, Gone," the disc's other  Cetera contribution, also stands out for  Dacus ' spot-on slide guitar intonation, which mimics a similar style used most notably by  George Harrison. Although it failed to chart when extracted as a single, Robert Lamm's (keyboards/vocals) "Love Was New" is one of the more jazz-influenced tunes on  Hot Streets. The laid-back groove effortlessly carries the melody behind a fusion of light rock and contemporary jazz. The rapidly changing pop music landscape, whose horizons would embrace disco and new wave, would all but abandon  Chicago  for the group's next few albums. Although the band attempted to adapt to the trends, it would be four LPs and four years before  Chicago  would re-emerge in full form on its comeback,  Chicago 16  (1982).

JUDGE DREAD * 2 CD * The Legendary Judge Dread * PRECINTADO!! Reggae Ska JUDGE DREAD * 2 CD * The Legendary Judge Dread * PRECINTADO!! Los Nombres de sus discos mas famosos fueron Working Class ‘ero,” (1974), “Bedtime Stories,” (1975), “Last of the Skinheads” (1976), el best seller “40 Big Ones” (1980), and “Not Guilty” (1984). Como olvidarlos ! El legendario exitazo “Bring Back the Skins” y “Jamaica Jerk Off”.
