Bernie Taupin, el letrista de Elton John, quería escribir un disco sobre su ascenso a la fama con John. La balada Someone Saved My Life Tonight habla de una noche en que Taupin evitó que el cantante se suicidara con un horno de gas. Mientras Taupin sudaba para escribir cada verso, John componía la música a bordo de un transatlántico de lujo. En un crucero que cruzaba el atlántico, desde Inglaterra a Estados Unidos en 1974, fue cuando Elton John y Bernie Taupin aprovecharon el placentero tiempo de viaje para escribir el disco de hoy. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (Elton y Bernie) armaron este disco conceptual que relata cuestiones personales. Son todas referencias a sus propias vidas, a las de sus amigos y a los dramas y alegrías que los rodeaban. El disco incluye "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", que fuera considerado por el propio Elton John como el mejor tema que jamás hayan escrito junto a Taupin.
