La Marshall Tucker, fue la banda que cerró el triángulo de oro dentro del rock sureño junto a las otras dos más representativas del género, The Allman Brothers Band y Lynyrd Skynyrd, teniendo cada una de estas formaciones caminos y orientaciones diferentes, pero tomando como base el sonido y sentimiento sureño como raíz de su música. El distintivo esencial de la Marshall y el sello único e inconfundible que marcó su obra fue el Country-Rock y la cultura "cowboy ", adoptando cierta actitud derivada del "salvaje oeste" en su música, llevada a cabo con gran acierto por los hermanos Toy y Tommy Caldwell. Nunca renunciaron a otros estilos como el rythm & blues, rock, blues o incluso el jazz, dada las aportaciones de unos magníficos, extraordinarios e incansables músicos que eran pura energía, sobre todo en sus memorables directos. Realizaban actuaciones increíbles, llegando incluso a ser delirantes para un público súper entregado. "Where We All Belong" doble álbum y tercero en su discografía, fue publicado en 1975 y se compone de una parte grabada en estudio y otra en directo, además de suponer un punto crucial en su carrera. Comienzan con el clásico "This Ol'Cowboy", un bello tema dedicado al héroe de Toy Caldwell, el actor y mito eterno del Western, John Wayne. Como dato anecdótico, posteriormente Caldwell le compraría el caballo que utilizó en 1969 en la oscarizada "True Grit" (Valor de ley). De claro estilo country-rock, con el uso de instrumentos propios del género como el banjo, Steel- guitar, la flauta o el violín, nos encontramos temas como "Low Down Ways", o una auténtica balada romántica "In My Own Way". El resto de temas de esta parte fueron grabados en los estudios Capricorn, todos ellos soberbios y podemos destacar "Where A Country Boy Legends", que contó con la ayuda de un guitarrista excepcional llamado Elvin Bishop, que en años anteriores participó con los Allman Brothers y en esta ocasión a la slide-guitar. En la parte de estudio, la Marshall estuvo formada por Toy Caldwell a las guitarras, su hermano Tommy Caldwell (bajo), George McCorkle (guitarra y banjo), Jerry Eubanks (flauta y saxo), Doug Gray (voz) y Paul Riddle a la batería. Estos eran los integrantes originales de la banda, a la que se incorporaron un buen número de músicos de reputado prestigio como fue el caso del legendario Charlie Daniels al violín, Paul Hornsby al piano, Johnny Vernazza a la slide y entre otros, al anteriormente mencionado Elvin Bishop. La segunda parte del álbum fue capturada el 11 de julio de 1974 en el Uhlein Hall Arts Center de Milwaukee, con la banda original y la inestimable colaboración de Charlie Daniels. Abren con la incendiaria y explosiva "Ramblin'", un tema rápido con un Toy imparable a la guitarra eléctrica, equiparándose a leyendas como Duane Allman. En "24 Hours At A Time", se puede disfrutar de uno de los temas más recordados y de una formación sobresaliente, ejecutando una colosal jam que se convertiría en su himno oficial. A continuación desgranando el clásico de B.B King "Everyday (I Have The Blues)", una Marshall pletórica nos obsequia con otro espléndido tema. Y para finalizar "Take The Higway", otro de sus clásicos. Unidos bajo un mismo sentimiento, "The Marshall Tucker Band" originarios de Spartanburg en Carolina del Sur nos dejan uno de sus álbumes más célebres, siendo uno de los mejores exponentes dentro del rock-sureño y narrándonos sus epopeyas por el "viejo oeste" como si fuésemos viajando en una antigua diligencia... Esta banda maravillosa formada en 1971 en Spartanburg, Carolina del Sur, por los hermanos Caldwell, Toy a la guitarra y Tommy al bajo, el cantante Doug Gray, el guitarrista George McCorkle, el batería Paul Riddle, así como Jerry Eubanks a las flautas, combinaba a la perfección el Rock, con el country, con el blues y con el Jazz. La banda adquirió un notable reconocimiento en los años 70 (época de apogeo del Rock Sureño), pero la muerte de Tommy Caldwell en accidente de coche en 1980, y el abandono de Toy Caldwell en 1982 para iniciar una carrera en solitario llevó a que la banda se disolviera en 1983. A finales de los 80 la banda se reformó, liderada por Gray y Eubanks, y con diversas formaciones y con muchos cambios, la banda sigue hoy en día, aunque lejos del esplendor de los años 70.- Yo reconozco que le tengo un cariño especial a esta disco, que está compuesto en parte por material de estudio, y en parte por grabaciones en directo. Destacan, además de la mencionada "How can i slow down", temas como "This Ol' Cowboy", "Low down ways", o la brutal "Ramblin'". His maiden voyage would likewise mark the beginning of a downward spiral in terms of the string of hits that was usually associated with  Chicago  albums. Both the upbeat and pumping opener "Alive Again" and the typical adult contemporary balladry of "No Tell Lover" became their last Top 40 hits for nearly four years.  Phil Ramone 's production gives the material an added and noticeable bite. The  Peter Cetera  (bass/vocals) rocker "Little Miss Lovin" recalls the band's earliest sides by blending an aggressive backbeat with a funky and soulful rhythm. "Gone, Long, Gone," the disc's other  Cetera contribution, also stands out for  Dacus ' spot-on slide guitar intonation, which mimics a similar style used most notably by  George Harrison. Although it failed to chart when extracted as a single, Robert Lamm's (keyboards/vocals) "Love Was New" is one of the more jazz-influenced tunes on  Hot Streets. The laid-back groove effortlessly carries the melody behind a fusion of light rock and contemporary jazz. The rapidly changing pop music landscape, whose horizons would embrace disco and new wave, would all but abandon  Chicago  for the group's next few albums. Although the band attempted to adapt to the trends, it would be four LPs and four years before  Chicago  would re-emerge in full form on its comeback,  Chicago 16  (1982).

Uptempo numbers with pop hooks dominate the set, the 12 songs zip by in an efficient 38 minutes, and instead of  Reed 's trademark meditations on the dark side of life, the lyrics are (for the most part) lean bursts of verse and chorus, in which the artist sings the praises of good times in general and rock & roll in particular (then again, on "I Believe in Love,"  Reed  pledges his allegiance to both "good time music" and "the iron cross," a bit of perversity to remind us whose album this is). But if  Rock and Roll Heart  sounds like " Lou Reed  Lite," there are more than a few flashes of  Reed 's inarguable talent. His band is in fine form (especially  Marty Fogel  on sax and  Michael Fonfara  on keyboards). "Banging on My Drum" is a crunchy rocker that recalls his work with  the Velvet Underground; "A Sheltered Life" is an amusing bit of  VU  archeology (the Velvets demoed the song, but this marked its first appearance on record); and the closer, "Temporary Thing," is a bitter, haunting narrative that foreshadows  Reed 's next album, the harrowing masterpiece  Street Hassle.

Máxime cuando hablamos de una de las figuras más influyentes y, a la par, menos conocidas de la historia del Rock y el Blues Para hablar de Graham Barnes (nombre real de Mr. Lee) nos tenemos que remontar a los barrios de clase media del Nottingham de 1960. Alvin, fuertemente influenciado por unos padres amantes del Blues y el Jazz, comienza a tocar la guitarra a los 14 años. Cuando sólo tenía 16 años formó su primera banda, The Jaybirds, la cual cambió de nombre varias veces hasta convertirse en Ten Years After. La banda despegó demasiado pronto. Tuvo un éxito efímero fuera de Reino Unido, haciendo algunos shows en Alemania. Esto supuso una apertura de miras para Lee que consolidó el estilo propio de lo que, más tarde, sería su propia visión del Rock Psicodélico que hacían Ten Years After: un Blues demasiado salvaje para ser ortodoxo y un Rock demasiado extraño para ponerlos en la misma lista que a The Beatles. Esta visión particular de Ten Years After los catapultó como banda de culto incluso antes de ser una banda conocida en todo el país. Ten Years After obtuvo un contrato discográfico y comenzaron a tocar en varios festivales de cierto renombre. Seguían siendo desconocidos para la gran mayoría y casi siempre eran una banda de soporte, pero la calidad y la fiereza que desprendían dejaba huella poco a poco en los espectadores. Su primer disco, homónimo, tuvo un éxito modesto en Inglaterra. Se podría presumir que Ten Years After, con esa reputación ya serían una banda de renombre a esas alturas. Pero el mercado americano era muy diferente al inglés. Lo que un día estaba de moda, al día siguiente era olvidado por completo, y la promoción del grupo no era su fuerte, lo suyo era tocar en directo. Como ha pasado muchas veces a lo largo de la historia del rock, todos los grandes grupos tienen un instante glorioso que los hace volar del anonimato al estrellato en un lance de, llamémosle por esta vez, suerte. El bautizo de fuego de Ten Years After fue a priori "una actuación de soporte en un festival hippie modesto que se estaba fraguando en un rancho de Bethel (New York), donde debido a lo precario del cartel y el presupuesto sólo tocarían unos 15 minutos". Cuando a Alvin Lee le pasaron una de las cuartillas de propaganda con información del festival pudo leer bien claro y en alto "Woodstock. 3 Days of Peace & Music...". El resto, amigos, es historia. La actuación de Ten Years After, y en particular de Alvin Lee fue inmortalizada en el mítico film "Woodstock", y fue recordada como una de las más salvajes junto a las de Hendrix y The Who. A partir de ese momento, el olimpo de los dioses del Rock Psicodélico esperaba a Ten Years After. En total, llegaron a grabar diez albumes y es reconocida como una de las bandas más influyentes de todos los tiempos, pese a separarse en 1973. Tras la separación, Alvin Lee se dedicó a colaborar con otros artistas y a sacar su propio material en solitario. Tocando todos los palos desde el Country al Jazz, fue siempre un guitarrista en la sombra de su propio éxito. Quizás el no encasillarse en un solo estilo le hizo no tener suficiente repercusión en sus trabajos. A lo largo de los años ha grabado con gente tan dispar como Mick Taylor, George Harrison o John Mayall. Su estilo como guitarrista se puede catalogar de Blues Rock de tintes progresistas. Muchas de sus frases son recordadas como cánones actuales dentro del Blues Rock. Algunos grandes artistas como Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Richie Sambora, Andy Timmons o Derek Trucks le han nombrado como una de sus principales influencias. A título personal quiero recomendar un recopilatorio, Pure Blues (Capitol, 1995), que presenta lo mejor de Alvin Lee tanto en solitario como junto a Ten Years After.
