XIX – Colonias británicas Impresionante baúl en madera maciza de alcanfor realizado a principios del siglo XIX. Estilo colonial inglés producido en el sur de India para el mercado europeo. Presenta asas, cerradura y bocallave en bronce; esquineras y cantoneras en latón dorado. La manija de la tapa se embute en la tapa, característica del estilo barco inglés. Todo original de época, la cerradura sigue funcionando con llave. Se aprecia la hermosa madera con la veta de cálidos matices caramelo. Así mismo, el grano se deja ver a la perfección, integrado en la exquisita pátina. Tapa con bisagras, al exterior placa central en blanco. El interior amplio y bien presentado ofrece el codiciado aroma de la madera de alcanfor. Este baúl es extremadamente versátil, se puede utilizar como mesa auxiliar, como un fabuloso espacio de almacenamiento para el dormitorio o como asiento adicional. Gran desconocida para el público general, la madera del alcanforero (Cinnamomum camphora) hace varios siglos que alcanzó por primera vez tierras europeas. Autóctona de China, crece principalmente al sur y sudeste del rio Yangtze y en Taiwan. Generalmente es de tonalidad clara. Es muy duradera, capaz de resistir a los insectos, polillas o a la podredumbre. Su consistencia es fuerte y no se agrieta ni alabea. Su característica más popular es un particular aroma fresco y balsámico, que además apenas decrece con el paso del tiempo. Todas estas propiedades la hacen ideal para la elaboración de baúles, pues transmite al contenido su agradable fragancia, a la vez que lo protege de plagas y del moho. Estos baúles eran tradicionalmente usados en China para almacenar mantas, ropa blanca, comida e incluso documentos. Además de emplearse para baúles, es una madera muy apreciada para realizar paneles, cajones, cajas, muebles, superficies ornamentales y tallas. Los primeros baúles de alcanfor llegaron a occidente por medio del transporte marítimo (para el que eran idóneos por todas las características ya expuestas), conteniendo té, sedas o porcelanas, pero era tal su belleza que quienes los recibieron no se resistieron a exhibirlos en sus salones.
