Sus canciones fusionan ska, pop, soul, reggae y punk rock, y sus letras tratan temas de amor, unidad y temas socio-políticos. The Beat, que consta de Dave Wakeling (voz, guitarra), Ranking Roger (voz), Andy Cox (guitarra), David Steele (bajo), Everett Morton (batería), y Saxa (saxofón), publicado tres álbumes de estudio a principios de los 1980: Es que no puede parar, (1980), Wha'ppen? (1981) y el Servicio Especial de Beat (1982), y una serie de singles, incluyendo "espejo en el baño", "demasiado bueno para hablar", "no se puede acostumbrar a Losing You", "Manos fuera de ella es mía" y "Todos a por ti".
