En 1969, grabó "New Routes", un álbum grabado en los famosos estudios Muscle Shoals.Un disco curioso y raro de encontrar, en el se incluía una buenísima versión de " Mr. Bojangles ", de Jerry Jeff Walker. Grabado entre el 10 de septiembre y el 2 de octubre de 1969, fue una de las primeras grabaciones de aquellos míticos estudios. Y claro lo mejor y lo que mas me entusiasma del asunto es que en el disco Lulu contó con Duane Allman en las guitarras. Mi entusiasmo por encontrarme este disco es evidente, ya que adquiero todo lo que toque de cerca o de lejos a los Allman. El disco contaba con temas como la canción " Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool For You Baby) " que obtuvo cierto éxito. Una buena versión de " Feelin' Alright " de Dave Mason. "Dirty Old Man" de Delaney Bramlett, etc... Por lo que se puede apreciar a simple vista; muy buen gusto tenia esta majisima señorita. El disco también contó con Barry Edward Beckett en los teclados, un hombre que que trabajó como músico de sesión con los artistas mas grandes. James Luther "Jim" Dickinson al piano y las guitarras, un hombre que no necesita presentación,simplemente recordar que sus hijos, Luther y Cody han seguido sus pasos con éxito,tanto con North Mississippi All Stars, como como Hill Country Revue y The Black Crowes. Y que el piano en " Wild Horses" de los Stones es el! El gran Cornell Dupree tambien se ocupo de las guitarras, junto a Charlie Figueroa y Eddie Hinton este ultimo guitarra de Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke, The Staple Singers y Elvis Presley entre muchos. Al bajo David Hood, otro con un curriculum que echa de espalda, y su hijo, Patterson Hood, es uno de Drive-By Truckers. Michael Utley con el organo, un hombre muy apegado a Rita Coolidge y Kris Kristofferson. Como se puede ver Lulu tuvo a la creme de la creme en su disco, y como productores tampoco se quedo corta: Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin y Tom Dowd. Nada mas y nada menos! Como ven nuestra Lulu,se lo monto divinamente en este disco y un año más tarde, lanzo un álbum similar, "Melody Fair". Ambos se registraron en el sello Atco y son piezas muy buscadas Lulu siempre siguió en el negocio del espectáculo,consiguiendo éxitos nada desdeñables, aunque su estilo siempre ha derivado hacia un pop muy comercial, siempre quedaran estos discos que grabo en los Muscle Shoals. The Byrds habían echado el cierre de una manera ya más bien lánguida, porque todo acaba estropeándose, y este jefe de operaciones enorme quiso refrendar su apabullante pedigrí haciendo lo que le dio la real gana. Impresiona la facilidad con la que, en aquellos aún iniciales años setenta, este hombre podía tirar de agenda. La armónica que abre la inaugural ‘I’m so restless’, sin ir más lejos, corresponde a un tal Dylan, mientras que el saxofonista que irrumpe para alborotar el canónico folk-rock de ‘My new woman’ es cortesía del mismísimo Charles Lloyd. No se detienen ahí las sorpresas: ‘Draggin’ no es solo un evidente tributo a los Beach Boys, sino que las armonías las aporta Bruce Johnston, uno de los Chicos de la Playa. ‘Time cube’ mira hacia la tradición más pura de estrofa repetida, aunque extrañamente coloreada con un sintetizador Moog. Pero es de autoría propia, a diferencia del epílogo del álbum, la célebre tonada tradicional ‘The water is wide’. El modo más campestre, con ‘slide’ de por medio, le sirve a ‘Bag full of money’ para abrir la cara B, donde a su vez se cuela el desmadre fronterizo de ‘Mi linda’ o el ‘blues’ a la vieja usanza de ‘Hanoi Hannah’. Y es toda esa mezcolanza, su permanente carácter híbrido, las decisiones extrañas (el coro infantil de ‘Stone’), lo que quizá no hiciese de este LP un referente de su década. Y eso, a pesar de que piezas como ‘Lost my drivin’ wheel’ revivieran todo el músculo y la chispa de los mejores Byrds. Aquellos que fueron, y siempre serán, puritita gloria. In a sense, it's a back-to-basics album that emphasizes much of what McGuinn does so well: his forceful reedy vocals, his guitar playing, and his skills at both writing earnest folk-rock material (usually with future Bob Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy here) and interpreting unusual traditional and contemporary songs. Never was it folkier than on the acoustic "I'm So Restless," which benefited from harmonica by Dylan himself (about whom the song was partially about). All four of the other original Byrds play on "My New Woman," which is virtually a reunion of the original quintet, with the addition of saxophone by jazzman Charles Lloyd; David Crosby makes unobtrusive cameos on some other tracks. As likable as it is, however, the album isn't an unqualified triumph. Some of the songs aren't so hot, some of the Moog synthesizer (by McGuinn) is unnecessary, his vocals sometimes seem to have been recorded with too much brittleness, and none of this is as good as the best of the Byrds. Unexpected influences make themselves heard in the Beach Boys harmonies of "Draggin'" (with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys on piano and backup harmonies), the Vietnam blues of "Hanoi Hannah," and the gospel-rock of "Stone." The 2004 CD reissue adds two previously unissued bonus tracks: a solo acoustic cover of the traditional folk song "John, John" and a less pleasing cover of Jackson Browne 's "Jamaica, Say You Will." It also has historical liner notes with plenty of quotes on the sessions and songs from McGuinn himself. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.
