LITTLE RIVER BAND: TIME EXPOSURE [DEU 1981] LP LITTLE RIVER BAND: TIME EXPOSURE [DEU 1981] LP Little River Band   "Time Exposure"  LP (Capitol - Emi)  1981  made in Germany cat. num.  10C 064-400 042 #rock     The Night Owls   Man On Your Mind   Take It Easy On Me   Ballerina   Love Will Survive   Full Circle   Just Say That You Love Me   Suicide Boulevard   Orbit Zero   Don't Let The Needle Win   Guiding Light   When  Little River Band  formed in 1975, Australia immediately took notice. The key bandmembers were already well known to Australians. Lead singer  Glenn Shorrock  had made his name in mid-'60s group  the Twilights, a  Beatles -sounding pop group that scored a national number one record with its version of  the Velvelettes ' "Needle in a Haystack." When the group broke up in 1969,  Shorrock  became lead singer of  Axiom, whose "A Little Ray of Sunshine" is still an Australian classic rock staple.  LRB 's  Beeb Birtles  had been the bass player for a popular  Twilights -era pop group called  Zoot  (Rick Springfield was a later member). When that group broke up, in search of musical credibility,  Birtles  auditioned as the bass player, but was instantly elevated to a front-line position alongside  Graham Goble. Even  LRB 's manager was well-known.  Glenn Wheatley  had been the bassist with another of Australia's bands, and possibly its most legendary,  the Masters Apprentices. Given all that background, when  Shorrock  and  Birtles  revealed they were forming a group with  Goble, managed by  Wheatley, it was major event in Australian music.

NICK LOWE: LABOUR OF LUST [ESP 1979] LP NICK LOWE: LABOUR OF LUST [ESP 1979] LP Nick Lowe   "Labour Of Lust"  LP (Radar)  1979  made in Spain cat. num.  S 90.150 #rock  #pop rock   Cruel To Be Kind   Cracking Up   Big Kick, Plain Scrap!   Born Fighter   You Make Me   Skin Deep   Switchboard Susan   Endless Grey Ribbon   Without Love   Dose Of You   Love So Fine   Jesus of Cool  was a jukebox, spinning out a series of perfectly crafted -- and decidedly quirky and subversive -- pop singles. In contrast,  Nick Lowe 's second album,  Labour of Lust, is the work of a bar band, in this case  Rockpile, playing the hell out of the same type of songs. Naturally, the result is a more coherent sound that may be a little less freewheelingly eclectic, but it is no less brilliant. Recorded simultaneously with  Dave Edmunds '  Repeat When Necessary,  Labour of Lust  benefits from the muscular support of  Rockpile, who make  Lowe 's songs crackle with vitality. Working primarily in the roots rock vein of  Brinsley Schwarz  but energizing his traditionalist tendencies with strong pop melodies, a sense of humor, and an edgy new wave sensibility,  Lowe  comes up with one of his best sets of songs. Not only is his only hit, the propulsively hook-laden "Cruel to Be Kind," here, but so are the rampaging outsider anthem "Born Fighter," the tongue-in-cheek,  Chuck Berry -style "Love So Fine," the wonderful pure pop of "Dose of You," the haunting "Endless Grey Ribbon," the druggy "Big Kick, Plain Scrap!," and the terrific "Cracking Up," as well as his definitive version of  Mickey Jupp 's "Switchboard Susan." It's an exceptional collection of inventive pop songs, delivered with vigor and energy, making it one of the great records of the new wave.

THE MOODY BLUES: THE PRESENT [UK 1985] LP THE MOODY BLUES: THE PRESENT [UK 1985] LP The Moody Blues   "The Present"  LP (Threshold)  1985  made in UK cat. num.  810 119-1 #rock  #progressive rock   A1 Blue World 5:16 A2 Meet Me Halfway 4:09 A3 Sitting At The Wheel 5:35 A4 Going Nowhere 5:27 B1 Hole In The World 1:55 B2 Under My Feet 4:48 B3 It's Cold Outside Your Heart 4:23 B4 Running Water 3:20 B5 I Am 1:41 B6 Sorry 4:56   ELO  fans who found in  Long Distance Voyager  a new  Discovery  can be excused for thinking there's no  Time  like  The Present. Just as  ELO 's follow-up to the sweeping  Discovery  seemed tame by comparison, so  The Present  failed to match the grandiose arrangements of  the Moodies ' previous record. It's still a solid effort, bolstered by strong songwriting and pleasant melodies, but as good as the opening "Blue World" is, its downbeat message is no substitute for the clarion call of "The Voice."  The Present  seems to make a conscious effort to scale back the arena-size sound of their previous album, returning to the warmly rendered ballads of old.  Patrick Moraz, whose keyboards were a revelation on  Long Distance Voyager, plays a diminished role here, as  Justin Hayward 's guitar takes more of the lead, suggesting a poor man's  Phil Manzanera  or  David Gilmour. While it charted well and provided hit singles in "Blue World" and "Sitting at the Wheel" (again, it's  John Lodge  who provides the most invigorating track),  The Present  is a gift that listeners will need to warm up to over time. Only after several sittings do  Hayward 's lush ballads like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Running Water" sink in. Following the format of their last effort, the closing tracks are given to  Ray Thomas, who once more proves a compelling presence (he's also the only good thing about "Going Nowhere"). "I Am" and "Sorry" amount to little more than love songs, but  Thomas ' sense for dramatic arrangements manages to elevate the musical discussion. Given the now infrequent release of new albums by  the Moody Blues, more could have been expected from  The Present, but less could have been achieved (as the disappointing  Keys of the Kingdom  demonstrated). If it's merely average by  Moodies  standards, at least  The Present  didn't bode ill for the future.

NILE RODGERS (CHIC): B-MOVIE MATINEE [ESP 1985] LP NILE RODGERS (CHIC): B-MOVIE MATINEE [ESP 1985] LP (Warner)  1985  made in Spain cat. num.   L 92 5290-1 #funk  #electro  #soul  #chic   A1 Plan-9 4:12 A2 State Your Mind 5:43 A3 The Face In The Window 4:14 A4 Doll Squad 3:50 B1 Let's Go Out Tonight 5:14 B2 Groove Master 4:38 B3 Wavelength 3:49 B4 Stay Out Of The Light   Released in 1985,  B-Movie Matinee  proved a stellar departure from  Nile Rodgers ' initial solo outing. Leaving behind the more traditional trappings of his R&B-inflected debut, he instead looked to the synthesized future, driving his organic bass and guitars into what amounted to a concept album of sorts, fueled by memories of lazy Saturday B-movie afternoons. Bright, punchy pop punctuates this set. From the quirky sci-fi of "Plan-9" and the contemporary urban groove on "State Your Mind," which is one of the album's better tracks,  Rodgers  fills the space with eminently danceable, if somewhat same-y, songs using synthesizer tricks to thrill. "Let's Go out Tonight," meanwhile, proved the album's hot prospect, dipping into the Top 100, giving  Rodgers  his only solo chart hit. Rounding things out are the ballad "Wavelength" and  Rodgers ' immaculate instrumentation -- most notably the guitar and bass, which bound through the funky "Groove Master" with glee. Perhaps a little too light on substance,  B-Movie Matinee  still manages to please. Being  Nile Rodgers  can't be easy, as the mere mention of his name conjures such strong sonic images from his  Chic  canon, and it's hard to ignore those predispositions when listening to his solo material. But that's no detriment to the fine set he's unleashed here.

ZZ TOP / AFTERBURNER 1985 !! ORG USA EDIT, CONTIENE ENCARTE + 1ª LABEL ORIGINAL !! TODO EXC ZZ TOP / AFTERBURNER 1985 !! ORG USA EDIT, CONTIENE ENCARTE + 1ª LABEL ORIGINAL !! Declinaron la oferta Tracks: -- 1: Sleeping Bag -- 2: Stages -- 3: Woke Up With Wood -- 4: Rough Boy -- 5: Can't Stop Rockin' -- 6: Planet Of Women -- 7: I Got The Message -- 8: Velcro Fly -- 9: Dipping Low (In The Lap Of Luxury) -- 10: Delirious Notes: ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). After scoring its biggest hit ever with its eighth release, 1983's polished ELIMINATOR, ZZ Top decided to continue in the same mainstream direction for its next release two years later, AFTERBURNER. Another big hit for the band, the album did spawn several hits, yet wasn't as strong overall as its predecessor. It was impossible to avoid the following ZZ hits on either MTV or radio between 1985-'86--the ballad "Rough Boy" (which innovative video was based on AFTERBURNER's space-age cover art), the synth stomper "Velcro Fly," the melodic "Sleeping Bag," or the rocking "Stages." 15 years after the band's debut release, AFTERBURNER found ZZ Top more popular than ever. Engineer: Bob Ludwig; Joe Hardy Producer: Bill Ham

CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 Cannonball Adderley   "Cannonball And Eight Giants"  LPx2 (Milestone)   1974  made in Spain cat. num.  MM.40-068/69 S #jazz previously released as "Portait Of Cannonball" and "Things Are Getting Better" on Riverside label. Joining  Adderley  for the six tracks here are fellow  Davis  alumni  Philly Joe Jones  on drums and  Bill Evans  on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated  Blue Mitchell  on trumpet and the equally illustrious  Sam Jones  on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two  Adderley  originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic  Gigi Gryce  number ("Minority"), and  Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare  Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the  Rogers & Hammerstein  chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from  Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto  Cannonball Adderley  is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with  Modern Jazz Quartet  co-founder  Milt Jackson  on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of  Wynton Kelly  on piano,  Percy Heath  on bass, and the one and only  Art Blakey  on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with  Jackson  immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation.  Adderley  counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between  Adderley  and  Jackson  sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of  Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during  Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as  Jackson  unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax.  Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from  Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of  Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While  Wynton Kelly  has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. [Some reissues include two bonus tracks supplementing the original seven-song running order, alternate takes of "Serves Me Right" and "Sidewalks of New York."]

RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE Ry Cooder   "Bop Till You Bop"  LP (Warner)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.  LB 56691 #rock  #blues rock  #rock&roll   Little Sister 3:49 Go Home, Girl 5:10 The Very Thing That Makes Your Rich 5:32 I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine 4:43 Down In Hollywood 4:14 Look At Granny Run Run 3:09 Trouble You Can't Fool Me 4:55 Don't You Mess Me Up A Good Thing 4:08 I Can't Win 4:16   Following his conceptual 1978 release,  Jazz,  Ry Cooder  returned the next year with the R&B/soul-based  Bop Till You Drop. The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.
