Uptempo numbers with pop hooks dominate the set, the 12 songs zip by in an efficient 38 minutes, and instead of  Reed 's trademark meditations on the dark side of life, the lyrics are (for the most part) lean bursts of verse and chorus, in which the artist sings the praises of good times in general and rock & roll in particular (then again, on "I Believe in Love,"  Reed  pledges his allegiance to both "good time music" and "the iron cross," a bit of perversity to remind us whose album this is). But if  Rock and Roll Heart  sounds like " Lou Reed  Lite," there are more than a few flashes of  Reed 's inarguable talent. His band is in fine form (especially  Marty Fogel  on sax and  Michael Fonfara  on keyboards). "Banging on My Drum" is a crunchy rocker that recalls his work with  the Velvet Underground; "A Sheltered Life" is an amusing bit of  VU  archeology (the Velvets demoed the song, but this marked its first appearance on record); and the closer, "Temporary Thing," is a bitter, haunting narrative that foreshadows  Reed 's next album, the harrowing masterpiece  Street Hassle.

The Byrds habían echado el cierre de una manera ya más bien lánguida, porque todo acaba estropeándose, y este jefe de operaciones enorme quiso refrendar su apabullante pedigrí haciendo lo que le dio la real gana. Impresiona la facilidad con la que, en aquellos aún iniciales años setenta, este hombre podía tirar de agenda. La armónica que abre la inaugural ‘I’m so restless’, sin ir más lejos, corresponde a un tal Dylan, mientras que el saxofonista que irrumpe para alborotar el canónico folk-rock de ‘My new woman’ es cortesía del mismísimo Charles Lloyd. No se detienen ahí las sorpresas: ‘Draggin’ no es solo un evidente tributo a los Beach Boys, sino que las armonías las aporta Bruce Johnston, uno de los Chicos de la Playa. ‘Time cube’ mira hacia la tradición más pura de estrofa repetida, aunque extrañamente coloreada con un sintetizador Moog. Pero es de autoría propia, a diferencia del epílogo del álbum, la célebre tonada tradicional ‘The water is wide’. El modo más campestre, con ‘slide’ de por medio, le sirve a ‘Bag full of money’ para abrir la cara B, donde a su vez se cuela el desmadre fronterizo de ‘Mi linda’ o el ‘blues’ a la vieja usanza de ‘Hanoi Hannah’. Y es toda esa mezcolanza, su permanente carácter híbrido, las decisiones extrañas (el coro infantil de ‘Stone’), lo que quizá no hiciese de este LP un referente de su década. In a sense, it's a back-to-basics album that emphasizes much of what McGuinn does so well: his forceful reedy vocals, his guitar playing, and his skills at both writing earnest folk-rock material (usually with future Bob Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy here) and interpreting unusual traditional and contemporary songs. Never was it folkier than on the acoustic "I'm So Restless," which benefited from harmonica by Dylan himself (about whom the song was partially about). All four of the other original Byrds play on "My New Woman," which is virtually a reunion of the original quintet, with the addition of saxophone by jazzman Charles Lloyd; David Crosby makes unobtrusive cameos on some other tracks. As likable as it is, however, the album isn't an unqualified triumph. Some of the songs aren't so hot, some of the Moog synthesizer (by McGuinn) is unnecessary, his vocals sometimes seem to have been recorded with too much brittleness, and none of this is as good as the best of the Byrds. Unexpected influences make themselves heard in the Beach Boys harmonies of "Draggin'" (with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys on piano and backup harmonies), the Vietnam blues of "Hanoi Hannah," and the gospel-rock of "Stone." The 2004 CD reissue adds two previously unissued bonus tracks: a solo acoustic cover of the traditional folk song "John, John" and a less pleasing cover of Jackson Browne 's "Jamaica, Say You Will." Leaving behind the more traditional trappings of his R&B-inflected debut, he instead looked to the synthesized future, driving his organic bass and guitars into what amounted to a concept album of sorts, fueled by memories of lazy Saturday B-movie afternoons. Bright, punchy pop punctuates this set. From the quirky sci-fi of "Plan-9" and the contemporary urban groove on "State Your Mind," which is one of the album's better tracks,  Rodgers  fills the space with eminently danceable, if somewhat same-y, songs using synthesizer tricks to thrill. "Let's Go out Tonight," meanwhile, proved the album's hot prospect, dipping into the Top 100, giving  Rodgers  his only solo chart hit. Rounding things out are the ballad "Wavelength" and  Rodgers ' immaculate instrumentation -- most notably the guitar and bass, which bound through the funky "Groove Master" with glee. Perhaps a little too light on substance,  B-Movie Matinee  still manages to please. Being  Nile Rodgers  can't be easy, as the mere mention of his name conjures such strong sonic images from his  Chic  canon, and it's hard to ignore those predispositions when listening to his solo material. But that's no detriment to the fine set he's unleashed here.

A rather routine slab of bluesy, heavy rock, it made the Top 50. Aside from  Bolin 's extended hard rock riffing, it prominently featured the lead vocals of  Candy Givens, who affected a blues-wailing pose along the lines of  Janis Joplin. But she didn't have the full throat or guts to back it up, ending up closer to also-ran female psychedelic singers like  Lydia Pense  (of  Cold Blood).  Zephyr  recorded one more album before  Bolin  left for stints with  James Gang,  Deep Purple, and a solo career; the group carried on throughout the 1970s. The band's debut finds  Bolin  already developed as a skilled player, but his playing, and the largely group-penned material, lack strength or subtlety. The most distinctive trait of the band at this point, in fact, is the somewhat histrionic singing of lead vocalist  Candy Givens.

The next year the two cut the similar-sounding  Under Wraps  using the  Jethro Tull  banner. Most of the work, including drum programming, was done by  Anderson  in his home studio before guitar and (scant) bass guitar were added. The group members were excited about their latest sounds, which brought a cold edginess to the usual intricate music (the acoustic "Under Wraps No. 2" being one exception). Lyrically,  Anderson  was letting go of his Olde English façade; here he showed his fascination with Cold War-era espionage. While the British audiences didn't mind the changes, U.S. buyers pretty much hated the album. Compared to the U.S. number 19 position of 1982's  The Broadsword and the Beast,  Under Wraps  never got past number 76. (Crest of a Knave, three years later, shot up to number 33.) The original release had 11 tracks, with "Astronomy," "Tundra," "Automotive Engineering," and "General Crossing" appearing as B-sides and bonus tracks around the world. Now the standard release carries all 15 tracks.
