Although it draws inspiration from older legends, myths, magical tales, and epic poems, fantasy emerged in Victorian England as its own specific genre. England, during that period, was the world's most significant economic power, and it experienced far-reaching industrialization. With that cultural backdrop, some writers chose to focus on the supernatural and seek refuge in enchanted worlds. And modern fantasy was born. Some of the more realistic writing of the time, like that of Charles Dickens, represented industrial and scientific development. But choosing an imaginary world was an attempt to preserve enchantment, some magical whimsy in a rapidly urbanizing culture. The industrial revolution was the fertile ground from which modern fantasy writing and art would spring. Children's literature was experiencing a golden age at that time, building upon years of folklore traditions. As parents enjoyed reading fantastical tales to their children, their desire for similar texts geared towards adults grew. By the early 1900s, most of the significant trends that fantasy tales would follow had been established. There was the dual influence of fairy tales and myths and inspiration from ancient cultural traditions. Writing styles ranged from texts and illustrations intended for children to the most intricately composed literature containing creatures, heroes, and worlds battling the forces of good and evil. As an antidote to urbanization, much of the writing centered around magic in rural areas, themes built upon later by J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S.Lewis. Although the artist Tom Antonishak is more famous for painting wildlife, we thought he really captured the essence of Victorian Fantasy in this beautiful painting. It draws your eye through the woods to the colorful, frigate hotel perched on top of the hill, and makes you long to discover its magical mysteries. The perfect gift for any jigsaw puzzler or fantasy fan, this traditional wooden jigsaw puzzle can be done time and again.
