Given the sadly neglected status of the band's early catalog -- meaning anything that was released prior to 1982's breakthrough  New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)  -- through the early 2000s, it is doubly unfortunate that a compilation like this remained out of print for an extended period of time. And though the studio albums remained in print in the U.K.,  Simple Minds ' early years hardly received the red carpet compilation treatment that their later works did. While nothing here came close to approaching the stadium-pleasing popularity of later smashes like "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Alive and Kicking," or even "Promised You a Miracle,"  Celebration  might provide a little shock to an initiated someone who snaps up a copy. It's a near-definite that plenty of people who own  New Gold Dream  and/or the  Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation remain oblivious to the fact that  Simple Minds  released five albums that ranged from good to spectacular between 1979 and 1981, before  New Gold Dream  came along with its perfect balance of art and pop to connect with a mass audience. Not only was 1979-1981 a prolific period for the band, but it was a period that witnessed them blossoming from a decent guitar-based post-punk band to a far more rhythmic and experimental entity that gradually shed their influences while ambitiously building on them. And as the few brave souls who have remained devout  Simple Minds  fans from day one might tell you,  Celebration  has stood the test of time better than  Glittering Prize  track-for-track.

Con sus dos estupendos albumes, sonaron bastante en las emisoras del Reino Unido y otros países (España, entre ellos), y llegaron a actuar en varias ciudades europeas. Pero lo que condenó a la banda de Liverpool fue, probablemente, que llegaron tarde a la fiesta. La segunda mitad de los 80 fue un momento dulce para el pop-rock inglés e irlandés, que consolidó a grupos como U2, Simple Minds, Dire Straits o Simply Red. Pero los RCP se subieron al carro en 1989, cuando el movimiento languidecía, y a pocos meses de la explosión, al otro lado del Atlántico, del fenómeno grunge. La banda aguantó como pudo el desinterés por el folk-rock, y aunque llegó a lanzar en 1991 un segundo gran LP, acabó deshaciéndose pocos meses después. River City People - This Is The World [4:57] River City People were a folk rock quartet formed in Liverpool, England in 1986, by vocalist Siobhan Maher, guitarist Tim Speed, his drummer brother Paul Speed, and bassist Dave Snell. Siobhan, Tim and Dave had both been with Liverpool Band "Peep Show" until summer 1987 - at one point both bands co-existed. The group appeared on Channel 4's The Chart Show and soon afterward signed with EMI, releasing their debut single "(What's Wrong With) Dreaming?" in mid 1989. Their album Say Something Good followed a few months later, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by legendary producer Don Gehman. In the summer of 1990, the band scored their biggest hit with a cover of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'". This was a double A-side with "Carry the Blame". " This is the World " followed in late 1991, but the group disbanded shortly after. Maher then teamed with ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson in the duo Kindred Spirit, releasing a self-titled 1995 album on Capitol Records. She released a solo album in 2002 called Immigrant Flower.

Jones  (11-12-44, Memphis) son el esqueleto de las grabaciones del sello Stax y uno de los  equipos de sonido más impecables de los años 60, tanto por su respaldo instrumental de otros artistas como a nivel de grupo.  Esos chicos blancos y negros representaban oficialmente el sonido de Memphis. En 1956, Jerry Wexler llevó a Wilson Pickett a Memphis para una serie de grabaciones: de allí salió 'In the midnight hour', su primer éxito de un millón de copias, debido, además de a la voz profunda de Pickett, a la batería de Al Jackson, más elaborada y atrayente de lo habitual. En aquellos años trabajaban como músicos de estudio en el 90% de los discos realizados en los estudios Stax, pero el grupo era algo más que una simple banda de acompañamiento: Steve Cropper, en particular, además de ser un hábil arreglista y productor, se distinguía por su fascinante y personalísima forma de tocar su guitarra Telecaster. Su contribución en la composición de temas importantísimos, como 'Knock on wood', 'In the midnight hour', '634-5789', 'Dock of the bay', 'Don't fight it' y 'See saw', en la primera mitad de los años sesenta sirvió para crear un interminable catálogo para todas las futuras bandas de soul.  The MGs sabían trabajar con precisión y puntualidad en estudio, y sabían caracterizar a la perfección su música. En 1969, grabó "New Routes", un álbum grabado en los famosos estudios Muscle Shoals.Un disco curioso y raro de encontrar, en el se incluía una buenísima versión de " Mr. Bojangles ", de Jerry Jeff Walker. Grabado entre el 10 de septiembre y el 2 de octubre de 1969, fue una de las primeras grabaciones de aquellos míticos estudios. Y claro lo mejor y lo que mas me entusiasma del asunto es que en el disco Lulu contó con Duane Allman en las guitarras. Mi entusiasmo por encontrarme este disco es evidente, ya que adquiero todo lo que toque de cerca o de lejos a los Allman. El disco contaba con temas como la canción " Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool For You Baby) " que obtuvo cierto éxito. Una buena versión de " Feelin' Alright " de Dave Mason. "Dirty Old Man" de Delaney Bramlett, etc... Por lo que se puede apreciar a simple vista; muy buen gusto tenia esta majisima señorita. El disco también contó con Barry Edward Beckett en los teclados, un hombre que que trabajó como músico de sesión con los artistas mas grandes. James Luther "Jim" Dickinson al piano y las guitarras, un hombre que no necesita presentación,simplemente recordar que sus hijos, Luther y Cody han seguido sus pasos con éxito,tanto con North Mississippi All Stars, como como Hill Country Revue y The Black Crowes. Y que el piano en " Wild Horses" de los Stones es el! El gran Cornell Dupree tambien se ocupo de las guitarras, junto a Charlie Figueroa y Eddie Hinton este ultimo guitarra de Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke, The Staple Singers y Elvis Presley entre muchos. Al bajo David Hood, otro con un curriculum que echa de espalda, y su hijo, Patterson Hood, es uno de Drive-By Truckers. Michael Utley con el organo, un hombre muy apegado a Rita Coolidge y Kris Kristofferson. Como se puede ver Lulu tuvo a la creme de la creme en su disco, y como productores tampoco se quedo corta: Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin y Tom Dowd. Nada mas y nada menos! Como ven nuestra Lulu,se lo monto divinamente en este disco y un año más tarde, lanzo un álbum similar, "Melody Fair". Ambos se registraron en el sello Atco y son piezas muy buscadas Lulu siempre siguió en el negocio del espectáculo,consiguiendo éxitos nada desdeñables, aunque su estilo siempre ha derivado hacia un pop muy comercial, siempre quedaran estos discos que grabo en los Muscle Shoals.
