Con sus dos estupendos albumes, sonaron bastante en las emisoras del Reino Unido y otros países (España, entre ellos), y llegaron a actuar en varias ciudades europeas. Pero lo que condenó a la banda de Liverpool fue, probablemente, que llegaron tarde a la fiesta. La segunda mitad de los 80 fue un momento dulce para el pop-rock inglés e irlandés, que consolidó a grupos como U2, Simple Minds, Dire Straits o Simply Red. Pero los RCP se subieron al carro en 1989, cuando el movimiento languidecía, y a pocos meses de la explosión, al otro lado del Atlántico, del fenómeno grunge. La banda aguantó como pudo el desinterés por el folk-rock, y aunque llegó a lanzar en 1991 un segundo gran LP, acabó deshaciéndose pocos meses después. River City People - This Is The World [4:57] River City People were a folk rock quartet formed in Liverpool, England in 1986, by vocalist Siobhan Maher, guitarist Tim Speed, his drummer brother Paul Speed, and bassist Dave Snell. Siobhan, Tim and Dave had both been with Liverpool Band "Peep Show" until summer 1987 - at one point both bands co-existed. The group appeared on Channel 4's The Chart Show and soon afterward signed with EMI, releasing their debut single "(What's Wrong With) Dreaming?" in mid 1989. Their album Say Something Good followed a few months later, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by legendary producer Don Gehman. In the summer of 1990, the band scored their biggest hit with a cover of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'". This was a double A-side with "Carry the Blame". " This is the World " followed in late 1991, but the group disbanded shortly after. Maher then teamed with ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson in the duo Kindred Spirit, releasing a self-titled 1995 album on Capitol Records. She released a solo album in 2002 called Immigrant Flower.

This singer-songwriter was also proficient on guitar and harmonica. Shearston moved with his family to Sydney at the age of 12, after his father’s farm was destroyed by drought. By the time Shearston was 19 he was a professional singer performing traditional Australian music in pubs, clubs and on radio and television. In the late 50s he made his first recording, for the Festival label, and this was followed by a number of albums for CBS Records in the early to mid-60s. Two of these albums were described as ‘among the best records of traditional music ever made in Australia’. In 1965, Shearston received an award for the best composition of the year when ‘Sometime Lovin’’ was covered by a number of artists including Peter Paul And Mary. In the mid-60s, together with Martyn Wyndham-Read, he recorded a live album on the Australian Score record label, although CBS would not let Shearston appear on the album. In addition, he had his own folk music television programme.  Shearston then travelled to the USA in 1968 and lived there for the next four years. During the mid-70s Shearston relocated to Britain, where he recorded two albums for Charisma Records. Shearston’s one major hit in the UK came in 1974, when ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’ made the Top 10. This single made Shearston the first Australian artist to have a simultaneous hit in Britain and Australia. Despite the long gap between albums he carried on and worked the folk clubs of Europe. Returning to Australia from England in 1988, Shearston was made a Deacon of the Anglican Church in December 1991, and has served in the parishes of Narrandera, Deniliquin, Hay, and Bangalow. In 2001, he released his first new studio album in over a decade.

This Frank Zappa-oriented release is part of the series, although this particular compilation is also geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. These two labels were manufactured and distributed by Reprise Records. This Frank Zappa-oriented 'Zapped' release is the 6th issue in the series, a compilation geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. (These two labels were manufactured and distributed for Reprise Records by Warner Bros. Records from mid 1969 [Previously 7Arts]). The black & white cover of this PRO 368 release has a portrait of Zappa and the title is "Zapped" without an accent over the 'e' (as on a subsequent/similar PRO 368 release with a 'collage' cover & Reprise label). This vinyl's label is pale blue with a dark blue 'Bizarre' text. Issues did occasionally appear later in retail outlets, particularly in Australia.

The underlying beat is a distorted and slowed-down sound of a motorcycle engine running, while the main melody begins with a car's ignition starting, and the end uses sounds of fireworks. The band's U.S. label Sire Records, however, decided to use the B-side " But Not Tonight " on the soundtrack to the movie Modern Girls and included the song on US editions of Black Celebration. As a result, the single was flipped, and released as " But Not Tonight " in the United States to help promote the movie. The band was not happy with this decision, seeing "But Not Tonight" as a useless pop track recorded in less than a day. The single did not chart. Surprisingly, despite previous criticism of the song by the band, an acoustic version of "But Not Tonight" was sometimes performed by Martin Gore on Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine Tour and is included in the 2014 album "Live in Berlin". The other two B-Sides are " Breathing in Fumes " and " Black Day ". " Breathing in Fumes " was a new song using samples from " Stripped ", mixed by the band and Thomas Stiehler. " Black Day " is an acoustic, alternate version of "Black Celebration" sung by Martin Gore, and is co-written by him, Alan Wilder, and producer Daniel Miller – the only Depeche Mode song where Miller receives a writing credit. The " Highland Mix " of " Stripped " was mixed by Mark Ellis (better known as Flood), who in the future would produce Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion records. Some editions of the Black Celebration CD include the extended remix of "But Not Tonight" along with "Black Day" and "Breathing in Fumes" as bonus tracks. Melody Maker praised the album as "psychedelia that can't be dated", while pondering, "I've yet to meet anyone who can tell me why the Cure are having hits now of all times." The Cure then embarked on their worldwide Top Tour with Thompson, Anderson and producer-turned-bassist Phil Thornalley on board. Released in late 1984, The Cure's first live album, Concert consisted of performances from this tour. Near the tour's end, Anderson was fired for destroying a hotel room and was replaced by Boris Williams. Thornalley also left because of the stress of touring. However, the bassist slot was not vacant long, for a Cure roadie named Gary Biddles had brokered a reunion between Smith and former bassist Simon Gallup, who had been playing in the band Fools Dance. Soon after reconciling, Smith asked Gallup to rejoin the band. Concert: The Cure Live is the first live album of English rock band The Cure. It was recorded in 1984 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and in Oxford. Its cassette tape edition featured on the B-side a twin album of anomalies, titled Curiosity (Killing the Cat): Cure Anomalies 1977–1984.

The Byrds habían echado el cierre de una manera ya más bien lánguida, porque todo acaba estropeándose, y este jefe de operaciones enorme quiso refrendar su apabullante pedigrí haciendo lo que le dio la real gana. Impresiona la facilidad con la que, en aquellos aún iniciales años setenta, este hombre podía tirar de agenda. La armónica que abre la inaugural ‘I’m so restless’, sin ir más lejos, corresponde a un tal Dylan, mientras que el saxofonista que irrumpe para alborotar el canónico folk-rock de ‘My new woman’ es cortesía del mismísimo Charles Lloyd. No se detienen ahí las sorpresas: ‘Draggin’ no es solo un evidente tributo a los Beach Boys, sino que las armonías las aporta Bruce Johnston, uno de los Chicos de la Playa. ‘Time cube’ mira hacia la tradición más pura de estrofa repetida, aunque extrañamente coloreada con un sintetizador Moog. Pero es de autoría propia, a diferencia del epílogo del álbum, la célebre tonada tradicional ‘The water is wide’. El modo más campestre, con ‘slide’ de por medio, le sirve a ‘Bag full of money’ para abrir la cara B, donde a su vez se cuela el desmadre fronterizo de ‘Mi linda’ o el ‘blues’ a la vieja usanza de ‘Hanoi Hannah’. Y es toda esa mezcolanza, su permanente carácter híbrido, las decisiones extrañas (el coro infantil de ‘Stone’), lo que quizá no hiciese de este LP un referente de su década. Y eso, a pesar de que piezas como ‘Lost my drivin’ wheel’ revivieran todo el músculo y la chispa de los mejores Byrds. Aquellos que fueron, y siempre serán, puritita gloria. In a sense, it's a back-to-basics album that emphasizes much of what McGuinn does so well: his forceful reedy vocals, his guitar playing, and his skills at both writing earnest folk-rock material (usually with future Bob Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy here) and interpreting unusual traditional and contemporary songs. Never was it folkier than on the acoustic "I'm So Restless," which benefited from harmonica by Dylan himself (about whom the song was partially about). All four of the other original Byrds play on "My New Woman," which is virtually a reunion of the original quintet, with the addition of saxophone by jazzman Charles Lloyd; David Crosby makes unobtrusive cameos on some other tracks. As likable as it is, however, the album isn't an unqualified triumph. Some of the songs aren't so hot, some of the Moog synthesizer (by McGuinn) is unnecessary, his vocals sometimes seem to have been recorded with too much brittleness, and none of this is as good as the best of the Byrds. Unexpected influences make themselves heard in the Beach Boys harmonies of "Draggin'" (with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys on piano and backup harmonies), the Vietnam blues of "Hanoi Hannah," and the gospel-rock of "Stone." The 2004 CD reissue adds two previously unissued bonus tracks: a solo acoustic cover of the traditional folk song "John, John" and a less pleasing cover of Jackson Browne 's "Jamaica, Say You Will." Although these renditions of "First Light" and "Red Clay" will not make listeners forget the original versions, it is gratifying to hear the trumpeter really pushing himself. His reputation had been soiled by his Columbia funk albums but this set shows that in 1980  Hubbard  had few competitors among trumpeters. It's well worth searching for.

However, even though many of the songs on this soundtrack are not as memorable as their more popular collaborations, this album is not that bad. In fact, many of the songs are quite catchy, including "The World Is a Circle" and "Reflections." Some of the vocals are sung by the actors, including  Sally Kellerman  and the late  Bobby Van.  Burt Bacharach  has a certain knack for production of not-so-great singers (himself included) and, fortunately, it shows here with the actors. Other actors had their singing parts dubbed by more seasoned vocalists.  Shawn Phillips  is the singer on the title track.

Joining  Adderley  for the six tracks here are fellow  Davis  alumni  Philly Joe Jones  on drums and  Bill Evans  on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated  Blue Mitchell  on trumpet and the equally illustrious  Sam Jones  on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two  Adderley  originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic  Gigi Gryce  number ("Minority"), and  Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare  Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the  Rogers & Hammerstein  chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from  Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto  Cannonball Adderley  is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with  Modern Jazz Quartet  co-founder  Milt Jackson  on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of  Wynton Kelly  on piano,  Percy Heath  on bass, and the one and only  Art Blakey  on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with  Jackson  immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation.  Adderley  counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between  Adderley  and  Jackson  sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of  Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during  Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as  Jackson  unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax.  Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from  Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of  Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While  Wynton Kelly  has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. Combining their various influences (including R&B, pop, dance, electronica),  Heaven 17  fused these styles together to made an almost perfect sound. A strong melody, stunning vocals from  Glenn Gregory, and tight production equal a fascinating glimpse into the human struggle. Adding a number of session players, including a guitarist,  Heaven 17  was able to expand and build on their solid sound.  Gregory  is also allowed to branch out on this album and write more personal and political statements that were not clearly heard on their first two albums. Fans will not be disappointed, and in fact, this could be the album to win new fans over. "Sunset Now," and "Flamedown," are just a few of the reasons for this ep greatness.

Given the sadly neglected status of the band's early catalog -- meaning anything that was released prior to 1982's breakthrough  New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)  -- through the early 2000s, it is doubly unfortunate that a compilation like this remained out of print for an extended period of time. And though the studio albums remained in print in the U.K.,  Simple Minds ' early years hardly received the red carpet compilation treatment that their later works did. While nothing here came close to approaching the stadium-pleasing popularity of later smashes like "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Alive and Kicking," or even "Promised You a Miracle,"  Celebration  might provide a little shock to an initiated someone who snaps up a copy. It's a near-definite that plenty of people who own  New Gold Dream  and/or the  Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation remain oblivious to the fact that  Simple Minds  released five albums that ranged from good to spectacular between 1979 and 1981, before  New Gold Dream  came along with its perfect balance of art and pop to connect with a mass audience. Not only was 1979-1981 a prolific period for the band, but it was a period that witnessed them blossoming from a decent guitar-based post-punk band to a far more rhythmic and experimental entity that gradually shed their influences while ambitiously building on them. And as the few brave souls who have remained devout  Simple Minds  fans from day one might tell you,  Celebration  has stood the test of time better than  Glittering Prize  track-for-track.
