It is considered that Japanese pottery emerged in the thirteenth century when a craftsman named Kato Shirozaemon techniques imported from China. He installed his furnace in Seto in Aichi Prefecture today, and first produced ceramic Chinese style in Japan. The setomono term (part of Seto), one of the terms for ceramics in general, comes from this first production.  This art was an important development in the sixteenth century due to the growing popularity of the tea ceremony. Many workshops around the country were opened, but note specially the establishment in Arita in Saga Prefecture, Korean potter Lee Pyong Sam in 1598 Arita porcelain is still among the most famous in Japan.  Throughout the Edo (1603 - 1867) period, many daimyo (feudal lords) potters invited to settle on their land to produce high quality ceramic. This is how a particular art independently developed Chinese influence. Japanese ceramics are often described as sophisticated and subtle. Characteristics are their irregular shapes, demonstrating the sense of naturalism in the creation of man.  There are many workshops in Japan, each with its peculiarities. All styles of traditional ceramics reflect the local environment and history. Many of the furnaces can be visited. Here is a selection of the most famous, from north to south. This is a reproduction print of an Uhu (Whiptail Parrotfish). Uhu are some of the most recognizable fish in near-shore waters by divers and snorkelers. Their bright, vibrant colors and bird-like mouths used for crunching coral have appropriately earned them the name Parrotfish. Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to 18th century Japan. Before the invention of cameras and photography, fishermen used ink and hand-made wash paper to skillfully pull an impression from the surface of their fish. These early works were used solely to record the size of their catches for record keeping. Throughout the years, Gyotaku has evolved to become a refined art form of it’s own. Each gyotaku is 100% original and has it’s own distinct character; there will never be two prints that are exactly alike. Every scale and detail of the fish will be mirrored precisely in a gyotaku impression, accurately portraying and paying honor to it’s life and beauty. The non-toxic paint used in Brandon’s impressions washes away with water, ensuring that every fish is safely and respectfully consumed after being printed and nothing is ever wasted. Printed on heavyweight, textured fine art paper using archival quality pigment-based inks. Unframed print size is 13"x19, framed option is also available. Total size of framed print will be 16"x22". Picture and video included to show what a framed product would look like.

This image is of two puffins engaged in a ritual behavior known as "billing." They have an onlooker and there is a story behind this episode of billing. The onlooker had approached the female first and leaned towards her as if to suggest that he would like to begin to bill with her. She literally whirled around away from him and went to her mate; and they both began to bill together immediately. The rival puffin is left to watch and wonder how he can find such a partner on this nesting island. It is stated that puffins mate for life. They spend the bulk of their time one open oceans but return to their nesting area each year for about 3-months. They mate, incubate their egg, feed their puffling chick, and then go back to the sea until the following nesting season. They engage in this billing behavior throughout the nesting season, and after the little puffling has hatched. Once a puffling chick fledges, it will not return for 3 years to find a mate for the rest of their lives.
