DENIECE WILLIAMS: I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE [ESP 1979] 7” DENIECE WILLIAMS: I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE [ESP 1979] 7” Deniece Williams  "I've Got The Next Dance"  single 7" (CBS)  1979  made in Spain cat. num.  CBS 7399 #disco  #soul  #funk   a. I've got the next dance b. when love comes calling   One of the most distinctive vocalists who arrived during the soul era,  Deniece Williams  is known for soaring, four-octave soprano voice, late-'70s and early-'80s R&B classics such as "Free" and "Silly," and the 1984 number one pop hit "Let's Hear It for the Boy." Born  June Deniece Chandler  in Gary, Indiana, she grew up singing in a Pentecostal church, which forbid the congregation to listen to anything but gospel music. Outside of wanting a 1959 Thunderbird, she had no serious ambitions but was deeply interested in music. Her favorite singers were  Carmen McRae  (for her diction) and  Nancy Wilson, who, for  Williams, exemplified class and elegance. However, her she also looked up to her parents, both of whom sang. From 1968 through 1970,  Williams  recorded a handful of singles for the Chicago-based Lock and Toddlin' Town labels as  Deniece  (or Denise)  Chandler. None of them charted, but "I'm Walking Away" and "Mama, I Wish I Stayed Home" became Northern soul cult classics.  In need of employment and with college on the back burner, the fledgling singer was introduced to personal hero  Stevie Wonder  by John Harris, her cousin from Detroit, who happened to be on tour as a valet for  Wonder  (and was also his childhood friend). Her cousin arranged for  Williams  to meet  Wonder  backstage at a concert. Six months later,  Williams  was flown into Detroit by  Wonder  for an audition. Among the 26 who auditioned,  Williams, who sang "Teach Me Tonight," was one of three hired by  Wonder. The three became known as  Wonderlove. Her touring with  Wonder lasted for several years, a period in which she recorded background vocals for  Talking Book,  Fulfillingness' First Finale, and  Songs in the Key of Life,  Wonder -produced  Syreeta  and  Minnie Riperton  sessions, and other releases by the likes of  Esther Phillips  and  Roberta Flack.

LITTLE RIVER BAND: TIME EXPOSURE [DEU 1981] LP LITTLE RIVER BAND: TIME EXPOSURE [DEU 1981] LP Little River Band   "Time Exposure"  LP (Capitol - Emi)  1981  made in Germany cat. num.  10C 064-400 042 #rock     The Night Owls   Man On Your Mind   Take It Easy On Me   Ballerina   Love Will Survive   Full Circle   Just Say That You Love Me   Suicide Boulevard   Orbit Zero   Don't Let The Needle Win   Guiding Light   When  Little River Band  formed in 1975, Australia immediately took notice. The key bandmembers were already well known to Australians. Lead singer  Glenn Shorrock  had made his name in mid-'60s group  the Twilights, a  Beatles -sounding pop group that scored a national number one record with its version of  the Velvelettes ' "Needle in a Haystack." When the group broke up in 1969,  Shorrock  became lead singer of  Axiom, whose "A Little Ray of Sunshine" is still an Australian classic rock staple.  LRB 's  Beeb Birtles  had been the bass player for a popular  Twilights -era pop group called  Zoot  (Rick Springfield was a later member). When that group broke up, in search of musical credibility,  Birtles  auditioned as the bass player, but was instantly elevated to a front-line position alongside  Graham Goble. Even  LRB 's manager was well-known.  Glenn Wheatley  had been the bassist with another of Australia's bands, and possibly its most legendary,  the Masters Apprentices. Given all that background, when  Shorrock  and  Birtles  revealed they were forming a group with  Goble, managed by  Wheatley, it was major event in Australian music.

ART GARFUNKEL: ANGEL CLARE [ESP 1984] LP/RE ART GARFUNKEL: ANGEL CLARE [ESP 1984] LP/RE Art Garfunkel   "Angel Clare"  LP (CBS)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.  S 32076 #folk rock  #soft rock  #simon&garfunkel   A1 Travelling Boy 5:00 A2 Down In The Willow Garden 4:03 A3 I Shall Sing 3:36 A4 Old Man 3:24 A5 Feuilles-Oh / Do Space Men Pass Dead Souls On Their Way To The Moon? 3:09 B1 All I Know 3:46 B2 Mary Was An Only Child 3:28 B3 Woyaya 3:18 B4 Barbara Allen 5:25 B5 Another Lullaby 3:32   Garfunkel  (he was billed without his first name here) had a lot riding on his debut solo album, and  Angel Clare, named after a character in  Thomas Hardy 's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles, lived up to the heightened expectations for the man who had sung "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and other  Simon & Garfunkel  favorites.  Garfunkel  took no chances, issuing as the first single  Jimmy Webb 's "All I Know," which was arranged in a similar style to "Bridge" and made the Top Ten. Elsewhere on the record,  Garfunkel  took a more spirited approach, notably on a version of  Van Morrison 's "I Shall Sing" that was reminiscent of  Simon & Garfunkel 's "Cecilia" and made the Top 40. Certainly, there was enough firepower on the record, which featured guitarists  Jerry Garcia  and  J.J. Cale. But much of it was filled with stately, orchestra-laden ballads, sung by  Garfunkel  in his naïve, breathy tenor. If  Simon & Garfunkel  had been the thinking man's  Everly Brothers,  Garfunkel  alone turned out to be the thinking man's  Johnny Mathis.

Track listing: All songs written and composed by Martin Fry and Mark White. Side one 1. "Fear of the World"   3:50 2. "Be Near Me"   3:37 3. "Vanity Kills"   3:28 4. "Ocean Blue"   3:36 5. "15 Storey Halo"   5:36 Side two 1. "A to Z"   2:49 2. "(How to Be A) Millionaire"   3:34 3. "Tower of London"   3:36 4. "So Hip It Hurts"   4:17 5. "Between You and Me"   3:16 How to Be a...Zillionaire! is an album by the band ABC. It was released in the autumn of 1985. Four singles were released from this album, "(How to Be A) Millionaire " (UK: 49, US: 20), " Be Near Me " (UK singles chart: 26, US Billboard Hot 100: 9), " Vanity Kills " (UK: 74, US: 91), and the fourth was " Ocean Blue ", (UK: 54). The album peaked on the UK Albums Chart at 28 and on the Billboard 200 at 30. On the cover the album's title is in the foreground lit up like a spotlight against a tri-tone background on which various quotes of the album's lyrics can be seen. There is also a drop shadow behind the title. No dialogue at the start of the song " Vanity Kills ". Eden (see band line up in next section) does the harmony vocal on the song " Ocean Blue ". Guitars completely absent from Side Two/Tracks 6–10. No cursing from Eden in the song "A to Z". Four seconds of silence between "A to Z" and "(How to Be a) Millionaire". Eden performs the breakdown vocal and plays the instrumental solo in the song "(How to Be a) Millionaire".

ZZ TOP / AFTERBURNER 1985 !! ORG USA EDIT, CONTIENE ENCARTE + 1ª LABEL ORIGINAL !! TODO EXC ZZ TOP / AFTERBURNER 1985 !! ORG USA EDIT, CONTIENE ENCARTE + 1ª LABEL ORIGINAL !! Declinaron la oferta Tracks: -- 1: Sleeping Bag -- 2: Stages -- 3: Woke Up With Wood -- 4: Rough Boy -- 5: Can't Stop Rockin' -- 6: Planet Of Women -- 7: I Got The Message -- 8: Velcro Fly -- 9: Dipping Low (In The Lap Of Luxury) -- 10: Delirious Notes: ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). After scoring its biggest hit ever with its eighth release, 1983's polished ELIMINATOR, ZZ Top decided to continue in the same mainstream direction for its next release two years later, AFTERBURNER. Another big hit for the band, the album did spawn several hits, yet wasn't as strong overall as its predecessor. It was impossible to avoid the following ZZ hits on either MTV or radio between 1985-'86--the ballad "Rough Boy" (which innovative video was based on AFTERBURNER's space-age cover art), the synth stomper "Velcro Fly," the melodic "Sleeping Bag," or the rocking "Stages." 15 years after the band's debut release, AFTERBURNER found ZZ Top more popular than ever. Engineer: Bob Ludwig; Joe Hardy Producer: Bill Ham

The next year the two cut the similar-sounding  Under Wraps  using the  Jethro Tull  banner. Most of the work, including drum programming, was done by  Anderson  in his home studio before guitar and (scant) bass guitar were added. The group members were excited about their latest sounds, which brought a cold edginess to the usual intricate music (the acoustic "Under Wraps No. 2" being one exception). Lyrically,  Anderson  was letting go of his Olde English façade; here he showed his fascination with Cold War-era espionage. While the British audiences didn't mind the changes, U.S. buyers pretty much hated the album. Compared to the U.S. number 19 position of 1982's  The Broadsword and the Beast,  Under Wraps  never got past number 76. (Crest of a Knave, three years later, shot up to number 33.) The original release had 11 tracks, with "Astronomy," "Tundra," "Automotive Engineering," and "General Crossing" appearing as B-sides and bonus tracks around the world. Now the standard release carries all 15 tracks.

" Promised You A Miracle " is a 1982 song by Simple Minds and was released as the first single from their fifth studio album New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84). It is most notable for being the band's first successful chart hit in the UK, reaching #13 in the UK Singles Chart and charting for 11 weeks.[Their previous nine UK singles yielded no Top 40 hits in that country. It was the only song on the album that included Kenny Hyslop as the studio session drummer. Mike Ogletree and Mel Gaynor contributed for the other eight tracks. The song triggered a prolonged period of commercial success for the band, during which they yielded 21 original UK hit singles in a row, up to and including 1998's "Glitterball" from the album Neapolis. It also enabled them to make their debut on the British music television show Top of the Pops. A live version from the album Live in the City of Light was released in 1987. • MoFi SuperVinyl Pressing.   • UltraDisc One-Step.   • Edición Speed de 45rpm.   • Caja de 2LP.   • Fiel a los gráficos originales.   • Producción y masterización por Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab.   • Nuevo y Precintado de Fábrica.   DESCATALOGADO     DESCRIPTION: US 2019 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab  UD1S 2-006   Ranked #117 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time List.   Bob Dylan was at several crossroads in the mid-1970s. SIMPLE MINDS: CELEBRATION [ESP 1982] LP/COMP SIMPLE MINDS: CELEBRATION [ESP 1982] LP/COMP Simple Minds   "Celebration"  LP (Arista)  1982  made in Spain cat. num.   I-204 521 #new wave  #pop rock  #synth pop   Life In A Day   Chelsea Girl   Premonition   Factory   Calling Your Name   I Travel   Changeling   Celebrate   Thirty Frames A Second   Kaleidoscope   Originally released in 1982 by Arista in the U.K. and reissued on CD by the Dutch Disky imprint in 2001,  Celebration  serviceably culls some of the better moments from  Simple Minds ' first three albums: 1979's  Life in a Day  and  Reel to Real Cacophony  and 1980's  Empires and Dance. Given the sadly neglected status of the band's early catalog -- meaning anything that was released prior to 1982's breakthrough  New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)  -- through the early 2000s, it is doubly unfortunate that a compilation like this remained out of print for an extended period of time. And though the studio albums remained in print in the U.K.,  Simple Minds ' early years hardly received the red carpet compilation treatment that their later works did. While nothing here came close to approaching the stadium-pleasing popularity of later smashes like "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Alive and Kicking," or even "Promised You a Miracle,"  Celebration  might provide a little shock to an initiated someone who snaps up a copy. It's a near-definite that plenty of people who own  New Gold Dream  and/or the  Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation remain oblivious to the fact that  Simple Minds  released five albums that ranged from good to spectacular between 1979 and 1981, before  New Gold Dream  came along with its perfect balance of art and pop to connect with a mass audience. Not only was 1979-1981 a prolific period for the band, but it was a period that witnessed them blossoming from a decent guitar-based post-punk band to a far more rhythmic and experimental entity that gradually shed their influences while ambitiously building on them. And as the few brave souls who have remained devout  Simple Minds  fans from day one might tell you,  Celebration  has stood the test of time better than  Glittering Prize  track-for-track.

Tracks: 1-2, 1-10, 1-14 & 1-22 from the Walker Brothers album 'Images' (1967). Tracks: 1-8 & 1-15 from the Scott Walker album 'Scott' (1967). Tracks: 1-11, 1-12, 1-18 & 1- 20 from the Scott Walker album 'Scott 2' (1968). Track: 1-6 'A' side of the Scott Walker single 'Joanna' (1968). Tracks: 1-1, 1-9, 1-13, 1-17 & 1-21 from the Scott Walker album 'Scott 3' (1969). Tracks: 2-3, 2-8, 2-10, 2-14, 2-15, 2-19 & 2-23 from the Scott Walker album 'Scott Sings Songs From His T.V. Series' (1969). Tracks: 1-7 & 1-16 from the Scott Walker album 'Scott 4' (1969). Tracks: 1-5 & 1-19 from the Scott Walker album 'Til The Band Comes In' (1970). Track: 2-5 'A' side of the Scott Walker single 'I Still See You' (Love-Theme from the film 'The Go Between') (1971). Tracks: 2-7, 2-9, 2-11, 2-12, 2-21 & 2-22 from the Scott Walker album 'The Moviegoer' (1972). Tracks: 2-1, 2-2, 2-16, 2-18, 2-20 from the Scott Walker album 'Any Day Now' (1973). 'Loss Of Love' was released in 1972, not 1969. Similarly, 'The Me I Never Knew' was released in 1973, not 1969. This single and album track also featured in the film 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland'. 'Come Saturday Morning' & 'That Night' were released in 1972, not 1969. 'This Way Mary' & 'A Face In The Crowd' were released in 1972, not 1970. The incorrect dates appear in the notes.

The room was on the fourth floor, and the door was locked - with the key on the inside. The windows were closed and fastened - on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murderer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs? Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery. Except Auguste Dupin, who could see further and think more clearly than other people. The answers to the mystery were all there, but only a clever man could see them.. OUP Oxford. UK. Año 2007.

NICK LOWE: LABOUR OF LUST [ESP 1979] LP NICK LOWE: LABOUR OF LUST [ESP 1979] LP Nick Lowe   "Labour Of Lust"  LP (Radar)  1979  made in Spain cat. num.  S 90.150 #rock  #pop rock   Cruel To Be Kind   Cracking Up   Big Kick, Plain Scrap!   Born Fighter   You Make Me   Skin Deep   Switchboard Susan   Endless Grey Ribbon   Without Love   Dose Of You   Love So Fine   Jesus of Cool  was a jukebox, spinning out a series of perfectly crafted -- and decidedly quirky and subversive -- pop singles. In contrast,  Nick Lowe 's second album,  Labour of Lust, is the work of a bar band, in this case  Rockpile, playing the hell out of the same type of songs. Naturally, the result is a more coherent sound that may be a little less freewheelingly eclectic, but it is no less brilliant. Recorded simultaneously with  Dave Edmunds '  Repeat When Necessary,  Labour of Lust  benefits from the muscular support of  Rockpile, who make  Lowe 's songs crackle with vitality. Working primarily in the roots rock vein of  Brinsley Schwarz  but energizing his traditionalist tendencies with strong pop melodies, a sense of humor, and an edgy new wave sensibility,  Lowe  comes up with one of his best sets of songs. Not only is his only hit, the propulsively hook-laden "Cruel to Be Kind," here, but so are the rampaging outsider anthem "Born Fighter," the tongue-in-cheek,  Chuck Berry -style "Love So Fine," the wonderful pure pop of "Dose of You," the haunting "Endless Grey Ribbon," the druggy "Big Kick, Plain Scrap!," and the terrific "Cracking Up," as well as his definitive version of  Mickey Jupp 's "Switchboard Susan." It's an exceptional collection of inventive pop songs, delivered with vigor and energy, making it one of the great records of the new wave.

TANGERINE DREAM: EXIT [UK 1984] CD/RE TANGERINE DREAM: EXIT [UK 1984] CD/RE (Virgin)  1984  made in UK cat. num.  CDV 2212 #space rock  #progressive rock   1 Kiew Mission 9:18 2 Pilots Of Purple Twilight 4:19 3 Choronzon 4:07 4 Exit 5:33 5 Network 23 4:55 6 Remote Viewing 8:20   Exit marks the beginning of a new phase in Tangerine Dream's music: Gone were the side-long, sequencer-led journeys, replaced by topical pieces that were more self-contained in scope, more contemporary in sound. Johannes Schmoelling's influence is really felt for the first time here; Tangram, for all its crispness and melody, was simply a refinement of Force Majeure's principles, and the soundtrack to Thief not an album proper. On Exit, listeners are introduced to electronic music's next generation, notably on "Choronzon" and "Network 23," which brought the sound of the dancefloor into the mix (it hasn't left since). That's not to suggest that Tangerine Dream has stopped creating eerie, evocative music; both "Pilots of Purple Twilight" and the stately "Exit" will feel familiar to fans, and the opening "Kiew Mission" is a captivating commentary on nuclear war that includes vocals after a sort (a woman's voice reading locations in Russian). Exit ends on a surprisingly dark note, the alien and foreboding "Remote Viewing." It's on this track more than any other that Tangerine Dream returns to its past, invoking Phaedra and the sequencer-driven works that followed, as if to tell fans that Exit's changes weren't the result of a new band, just a new direction. With one foot in the excesses of the past and one clearly on the road to a more concise sound, Exit is a transitional work. As Schmoelling and, later, Paul Haslinger exerted their influence on Tangerine Dream's music, the emphasis shifted from dark and moody commentary to more positive subjects. It's worth noting that Edgar Froese's social conscience fuels much of Exit -- copies of the record were made available to a cross-section of Russian citizens free of charge to promote an open exchange of ideas at a time when nuclear annihilation was taken seriously. Future albums channeled Froese's activism to environmental concerns, which dovetailed with the band's by-then new age sensibilities. Both here and on White Eagle, Tangerine Dream ushers in the promise and the peril of a new world where reality has caught up with science fiction. Perhaps with such a message, the medium needed to be simpler and more direct.

EDWIN STARR: HAPPY RADIO [FRA 1979] LP EDWIN STARR: HAPPY RADIO [FRA 1979] LP (20th Century)  1979  made in France cat. num.  T-591 #funk  #disco     A1 H.A.P.P.Y. Radio 6:45 A2 Rip Me Off 4:13 A3 It's Called The Rock 7:25 B1 I'd Rather Fight Than Switch 4:12 B2 Drown My Heart 3:34 B3 My Friend 3:56 B4 Patiently 4:34   Edwin Starr enjoyed a renaissance in the singles chart at the end of the 70's, moving from the soul that had made him famous to light disco, and scoring a major hit the previous year with “Contact”, a cold slab of electronic funk with the most insistent Moroder styled synth bass line, similar to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. It was a worldwide smash and still appears on many disco hit compilation albums. The follow up, “Happy Radio” follows a similar vein, although there is less electronic rhythm and more horn fills; bearing similarities to the Earth Wind & Fire sound that was very popular at the time.  The single and title track is a nagging disco stomper, with a driving memorable bass line and chattering horn interruptions and would be a sure fire floor filler for a number of years. The rest of the album is pretty lightweight, following exactly the same pattern as the title track, except that the hooks aren’t as strong and songs like “I’d Rather Fight Than Switch”, and “It’s Called The Rock” sound about 5 years out of time. It’s interesting that barring the excellent title track the two traditional soul numbers are worth listening to (“Drown My Heart”, and “My Friend”), which probably come too late in the album for the listener,  who may have already turned off.

The original  Peaches, Francine Hurd Barker, a Washington, D.C., native, earned the childhood nickname "Peaches" because of her genteel manner. She sang in neighborhood groups and in her teens she became the lead singer for a group named the Keynotes. Starting her own group, the Darlettes, they auditioned for and were signed to D.C.-area label Date Records, where their name was changed to the Sweet Things.  The majority of their Polydor hits were written by  Perren,  Dino Fekaris, Kenny St. Lewis, and Melvin Ragin. Though there were other hits on Polydor, none came close to the success of their early- to mid-'60s Date singles. Though  Herb Fame believes it can happen again and employs a new "Peaches" to keep the name current while he holds down a job in the Washington, D.C. police department.

ZEPHYR (TOMMY BOLIN): ZEPHYR [UK 1991] CD/RE ZEPHYR (TOMMY BOLIN): ZEPHYR [UK 1991] CD/RE (Beat Goes On)  1991  made in UK cat. num.  BGOCD41 #rock  #blues rock   1 Sail On 7:42 2 Sun's A-Risin' 4:45 3 Raindrops 2:40 4 Boom-Ba-Boom 1:20 5 Somebody Listen 6:10 6 Cross The River 4:43 7 St. James Infirmary 5:15 8 Huna Buna 2:26 9 Hard Chargin' Woman 8:40   This late-'60s Denver group is most notable as the starting point for guitarist  Tommy Bolin, who was still in his teens when they recorded their first album in 1969. A rather routine slab of bluesy, heavy rock, it made the Top 50. Aside from  Bolin 's extended hard rock riffing, it prominently featured the lead vocals of  Candy Givens, who affected a blues-wailing pose along the lines of  Janis Joplin. But she didn't have the full throat or guts to back it up, ending up closer to also-ran female psychedelic singers like  Lydia Pense  (of  Cold Blood).  Zephyr  recorded one more album before  Bolin  left for stints with  James Gang,  Deep Purple, and a solo career; the group carried on throughout the 1970s. The band's debut finds  Bolin  already developed as a skilled player, but his playing, and the largely group-penned material, lack strength or subtlety. The most distinctive trait of the band at this point, in fact, is the somewhat histrionic singing of lead vocalist  Candy Givens.

COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' Colourbox   "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme"  single 7" (4AD)  1986  made in UK cat. num.  AD 605 #synth pop   A The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme 3:06 B Philip Glass 3:29   One of the legendary 4AD label's earliest and most under-recognized acts,  Colourbox  were among the first artists outside of the realm of hip-hop to rely heavily on sampling techniques; ultimately, their arty blue-eyed soul -- a fusion of far-ranging influences spanning from classic R&B to dub to industrial -- reached its commercial and creative apotheosis through their work on  M/A/R/R/S ' seminal "Pump Up the Volume" project, a reflection of the group's longstanding interest in the burgeoning underground dance music scene of the 1980s.  Colourbox  were primarily the work of London-based brothers Martyn and  Steven Young, who recruited vocalist  Debbion Currie  to sing on their 1982 4AD debut, "Breakdown."  Curry  was replaced by  Lorita Grahame  in time for the trio's 1983 re-recording of the same track, this time produced by  Mick Glossop.  Colourbox 's self-titled debut EP -- a collection of dub and scratching experiments heralding their first plunge into sampling technology, edited down from three hours of studio sessions -- appeared later that same year, with the single "Say You" following in 1984. After another 12", "Punch," the group issued 1985's "The Moon Is Blue," a teaser for its upcoming full-length LP, also a self-titled affair; "Baby I Love You So" and "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" both appeared the following year.  In 1987, at the behest of 4AD chief  Ivo Watts-Russell, the Young brothers teamed with labelmates  A.R. Kane  as  M/A/R/R/S  to record a single fusing the rhythms and beats from classic soul recordings with state of the art electronics and production. Complete with scratches by champion mixer  Chris "C.J." Mackintosh  and London  DJ Dave Dorrell, "Pump Up the Volume" -- a breakthrough effort heralding sampling's gradual absorption from hip-hop into dance music and ultimately the pop mainstream -- soon topped the British charts, the first 4AD release to accomplish that feat. Plans for a follow-up never materialized, however; stranger still, despite  M/A/R/R/S ' success, both the Youngs and  Colourbox seemed to vanish, with no future recordings forthcoming.

RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE RY COODER: BOP TILL YOU DROP [ESP 1984] LP/RE Ry Cooder   "Bop Till You Bop"  LP (Warner)  1984  made in Spain cat. num.  LB 56691 #rock  #blues rock  #rock&roll   Little Sister 3:49 Go Home, Girl 5:10 The Very Thing That Makes Your Rich 5:32 I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine 4:43 Down In Hollywood 4:14 Look At Granny Run Run 3:09 Trouble You Can't Fool Me 4:55 Don't You Mess Me Up A Good Thing 4:08 I Can't Win 4:16   Following his conceptual 1978 release,  Jazz,  Ry Cooder  returned the next year with the R&B/soul-based  Bop Till You Drop. The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.

Uptempo numbers with pop hooks dominate the set, the 12 songs zip by in an efficient 38 minutes, and instead of  Reed 's trademark meditations on the dark side of life, the lyrics are (for the most part) lean bursts of verse and chorus, in which the artist sings the praises of good times in general and rock & roll in particular (then again, on "I Believe in Love,"  Reed  pledges his allegiance to both "good time music" and "the iron cross," a bit of perversity to remind us whose album this is). But if  Rock and Roll Heart  sounds like " Lou Reed  Lite," there are more than a few flashes of  Reed 's inarguable talent. His band is in fine form (especially  Marty Fogel  on sax and  Michael Fonfara  on keyboards). "Banging on My Drum" is a crunchy rocker that recalls his work with  the Velvet Underground; "A Sheltered Life" is an amusing bit of  VU  archeology (the Velvets demoed the song, but this marked its first appearance on record); and the closer, "Temporary Thing," is a bitter, haunting narrative that foreshadows  Reed 's next album, the harrowing masterpiece  Street Hassle.

With bassist  Sam Jones  and drummer  Bobby Durham,  Peterson  tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of  Johnny Mandel 's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact.  Durham  sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up  Antonio Carlos Jobim 's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though  Peterson  devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique.  Francy Boland 's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to  Peterson 's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by  Jones ' agile bass and  Durham 's steady percussion.  Peterson  cools off his audience with an extended exploration of  Benny Carter 's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in  Oscar Peterson 's Exclusively for My Friends series,  Travelin' On  is warmly recommended.

The recording quality is merely okay but the viable and occasionally exciting historical music makes this a set worth picking up.
