Además de cantar, Denny tocó la guitarra acústica, el piano y el piano eléctrico en "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz". El compañero de banda de Denny's Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, tocó la guitarra principal en "Solo" y "At The End Of The Day". El tono en la mayor parte del disco es melancólico y personal, con un piano suave, cuerdas ricas una de sus mejores canciones, abre el álbum con una sensación de aprensión y anhelo, mientras que cortes como la hermosa y vívida canción principal, el anhelo 'At the End of the Day' y el evocador cerrador 'No End'. muy bien siga su ejemplo. Los covers de 'Whispering Grass' y 'Until the Real Thing Comes Along' de The Ink Spots rompen un poco el estado de ánimo, Estas dos canciones parecen insinuar una nueva dirección que nunca se materializó realmente en sus últimos años, aunque en un momento se rumoreaba un álbum completo de canciones de Ink Spots. Como último trabajo en solitario de Sandy Denny durante cuatro años, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz sigue siendo un disco íntimo y conmovedor.
